I like playing on peaceful...mostly do to the mobs being able to put holes in things.....anyways...i was looking around minepedia last night for command block options to get rid of storms....and found a much simpler option for getting rid of mobs destroying stuff. So now I am playing on a neutered version of Normal , where creepers don't leave craters and I get to keep my inventory when I die (the last one is going to go soon....to used to terraria)

The most useful commands I have found so far are, doDaylightCycle , keepInventory , and mobGriefing

to use them , if you are interested just type /gamerule in the chat interface (you have to have cheats enabled I think) and then one of the above options and then true or false . depending on whether you want it to do what it says or not..... http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Commands#gamerule

why do you play on peaceful ?
anyway to lock out storms once in awhile?

Well, since we're on FTB, you can just turn off rain in NEI. Right click the water drop and never worry about it again. You can similarly control time in NEI - right click to disable a time period, left click to set to that time.

I mostly play on hard, but I turned mob griefing off because I'm a builder before all else. Minecraft combat isn't super interesting, but I like having my worlds populated with more than farm animals.

Depends what i'm doing. If I'm planning to go a-wandering far from home to find stuff i'll use keepInventory, just because it lets me jump to my death rather than retrace my steps.

At times, I have been known to set time to day or turn off rain while breeding bees, but only when the RNG has gypped me. For example, i've inoculated nocturnal/rainfall and maximum fertility onto a set of breeding bees then two generations later the species mutation has appeared then bred out, but the crappy 1x fertility and lack of environmental tolerances that came with the new species has stayed.

I lose patience with that sort of malarkey...

Otherwise I tend to try and play as legit as possible these days.

When I'm developing I disable doDaylightCycle. When I'm playing, I don't tend to turn anything off, at least until a creeper blows up something I spent a lot of time on, or I get killed really far away and drop all my stuff. The frustration level plays a big part in which gamerules I use, I guess!

I play on hard, because to me, mobs are a big part of the game. If I was on peaceful and I found a Roguelike dungeon, exploring it would be like a stroll through the park. But if I was on hard, the mobs would provide somewhat of a challenge, which I enjoy. However if I'm in endgame stage, where mobs are more of a nuisance than a challange, I could just put down a magnum torch in my base and not have to deal with them.

Yep mobGriefing false is the very first thing I do when I start a new world. I don't mind as much getting blown to pieces and loosing my gear, but having holes blown in my buildings...
You dont have to create a world with cheats enables btw to use the /gamerules on singleplayer. If you already have a world you can hit esc and open it up to land and enable cheats, set the rules, close the world and open it up again.

If you don't like the rain, I usually set up this simple contraption ingame:

I can't remember what it's called, but there's a mod which makes sure that all items broken in an explosion still drop. To me this can justify leaving mobGriefing alone.

Creeper Collateral?

Personally, as much as I hate the creepers breaking my stuff, I couldn't live without the rest of the mob griefing. Thankfully there is a config option for codechicken core to disable creeper's damaging things ala mobGriefing false.

To be honest- I don't mind creepers. In fact I LIKE them.
Why? they only blow close to the player- so you are in full control of the damage (and its your fault there's a crater in your AE processor)
Its fun (ok, it sucks at the time), but its a part of the game I quite enjoy.
Enderman, on the other hand- are a f*****g nuisance. Always pulling stuff apart and you can't control the damage. You can't even prevent spawns/access as they teleport.

Edit- just saw endermanage in @FyberOptic 's sig. Cheers mate

Well you can build your base with only 2 blocks to the ceiling or with water on the floor everywhere :P

Yes, I shall also build it out of solid obsidian so I don't worry about creepers.

(It won't protect the area around my base. Its not as bad as it was, but everything slowly starts to look like swiss cheese)
that gives me an idea for a mod that adds a block to attract creepers to ezplode in certain areas

Something like the EBXL scarecrow?
(block/target wise I mean- decoys would be pretty damn sweet)
Actually I think the scarecrow is an entity, so if we have an API/"config" to make aggressive mobs target other entities- it'll be pretty neat.
Zombies could actually hunger for fresh meat so lock your cows up...
