FTB Problems, FPS, Textures Packs and Server.

Hi there,

New to the forums, huge fan of Vanilla and Tekkit.
After months of waiting for a new laptop and having my friend hassle me for FTB, I finally played.
Both me and my partner are playing (well trying to) and we have the exact same laptops, will list specs at the end.
I've had 3 major problems since installing it.

1)
I've had major FPS problems, and I don't know if it's a badly optimized FTB or HDD. Vanilla Minecraft, I get about 240fps on Dedicated GPU and 80fps on IGPU. FTB, I get straight 20-30FPS on both Dedicated and IGPU, which is painfully bad.
I see no difference with vanilla textures or BDCraft Sphax 128bit textures. I'm currently using Vanilla Sphax 128x + optifine.

2)
I'm having problems loading up FTB BDcraft Sphax textures. I have Optifine installed, and I can run the vanilla BDcraft Sphax 128x fine, but when I put the FTB textures into the vanilla folder, and load, I just get a black screen. Why can't I use the FTB texture pack? I tried the FTB texture pack with and without Optifine, No luck.

EDIT: I uninstalled Optifine, and installed the 64x version. It works fine, but I can't seem to get the 128 and 256 versions working.

And 3)
I'm trying to host the game with my partner (has the exact same laptop as me) and my friend. Me and my partner are getting terrible FPS, and It's completely unplayable for me. I suspect 3 things: Internet, HDD and Badly optimized.
I've set the server to have 2gb of dedicated ram, which should be plenty.

I will not say my laptop specs are the issue as I have an incredibly powerful gaming laptop. I max out practically every game except crysis 3.
I will list specs now.

MSI GT70 2OC.
i7 4700MQ 2.4ghz
GTX 770m + HD4600 (Optimus) (GTX 770m is pretty much equal to a GTX660TI)
8gb Ram
1tb 5400rpm HDD
1080p 17in screen.

Comparing to my previous gaming laptop which I use to play tekkit on @ around 80-100FPS, it should be far more powerful. My previous laptop had a i7 3630qm, GTX460m, 12gb ram and a Intel 120gb 330 SSD.

I'm confused to why I'm getting absolutely terrible FPS, and I'm positive it's because of the lack of SSD.

I suspect it's the HDD, but I'd like to hear what the community has to say

I'm upgrading the laptops soon, will be putting in Samsung 840 pro 512gb, 16gb Corsair Vengeance and Thermal paste.

I would say that it is not because of a lack of an ssd.

The FTB modpacks require a good system to run properly. I believe with Tekkit that the packs are heavily optimized and run on low end systems as well.

I assume you use laptops for either portability or lack of space because if neither is true then why buy a laptop compared to desktop.

Do you get the same fps no matter where you go. Also optifine does not work well with forge mods. I would suggest removing it and using the JVM arguments from this thread.

You also may want to try the steps here first to rule out any problems with your setup.

If you still have issues after that then go here for help with logs.

Thanks for the reply, I'll look through all the links tomorrow morning.

We got the laptops for portability AND size because we travel a lot, but we got large laptops because we also enjoy movies, tv shows and gaming.
The size doesn't bother us, and these aren't desktop replacements.
As of right now, we also live in a small apartment with some family, I plan on buying desktops once they move out.
FPS is actually quite stable, but it's not as high as I want. It sucks when FTB runs worse than Civ5, Batman and other taxing games. I thought it was badly optimized. Maybe I'll switch back to tekkit.

There are some mods that have been know to cause lag and fps issues. You could try disabling biomes 'o plenty because I know that some of those biomes can be really taxing on the hardware. You could also try some of the other mod packs and are not as heavily modified.

Even though its 99% not related to your FPS, I would still buy the SSD. Its amazing boost in terms of chunk loading performance which helps with exploring and it makes your whole computer feel faster to the point where your browser is faster than your internet connection can load a homepage.

I would try removing Biomes O Plenty and adding Optifine. Keep in mind, don't do both of those at the same time, and you may have to try different version of Optifine to see what works best for you. If one of these options increased performance, try using the other one to see if you can get even higher FPS.

Ha.....

I realized where I fudged up. I added the wrong Java application to my nVIDIA control panel. I just added Javaw.exe (I think that's the name). I tried out tekkit (uninstalled FTB to troubleshoot) and went from 40fps to 200fps. I'm happy lol.
