FTB Noob

Hi, I installed FTB today and my dad and I have been playing for a couple hours. We have been finding a lot of cool stuff, but we don't know what to do with it. I would much rather use something in the game to figure out how to craft things, than use a guide, but I don't know where to start.

Any suggestions?

Direwolf20 mod spotlights are among the best things I know of for learning mods.

Nevertheless, youtube spotlights of the mod (direwolf or any other you deem reliable) you want to try out is the best way to learn, that and/or looking on the homepage/wiki of that mod.
Recipes will only tell you how to make a item/block, not how and what their purpose is.
