I've always wanted to try linux. If I download it will I still be able to go back to Windows 7 easily? Can I run windows games and stuff from Steam on it?
It has very little to do with windows vs linux and everything to do with what you have going on in the background and your settings. I doubt they were identical. Were they the same java versions?
In the end, play whatever gives you the best experiance, but remember, correlation does not imply causation
Clean Windows 7 install, identical java versions (or rather, latest installs, etc). When it comes to software, I have the absolute bare minimum running on Windows. Like I said, I did my best to equalize the comparison between both environments. Could it be a driver difference? I don't know. The point is that the performance is ridiculous between two platforms to be attributed simply to "number of running background processes". I mean, I can have chrome open in lubuntu and other stuff open with no impact that I was aware on performance. On Windows, I had nothing open and couldn't manage squat. At what point do you draw the line?
While it's true that correlation does not imply causation, I did provide a data point for my case. Did you? I'd encourage you to install linux and try it out. It may not be linux directly that's providing the performance boost. It could, as you said, a variety of things, such as number of background difference, driver differences, etc.
This was the video a long time ago that propelled me to try out linux as I was so skeptical as well at how ridiculous the performance difference was:
If you're just starting out, I would strongly recommend something like a Ubuntu LiveCD -- you can run from these CDs, get used to the environment, and then boot back to Windows just by removing the CD and restarting your computer.I've always wanted to try linux. Sigh.
Maybe he should have tried installing 64bit Java like minecraft itself was suggesting. Again. Nothing to do with windows vs linux and more to do with this guy not having any idea what he's doing.
Thats the problem with threads like this. Its people with limited tech knowledge trying to give tech advice. The blind leading the blind. So you're basically killing a fly with a sledgehammer here. Install an entire new OS, or properly install java. So when Mr Linux guy comes around for further tech support for a new Minecraft issue, and people give him advice based on him being in Linux, he is going to have a good chance at being lost as all hell.
I have nothing against Linux. Ubuntu has become a great consumer variant. I have everything again ignorance. Preaching the greatness of Linux based on false and ill-informed tripe does more harm than good to an OS that has come a long way in the last couple decades.
