FTB lite on linux mint failling to start

So both me and an experience Linux user couldn't get it to start. Java differences. "unsupported major.minor version 52.0" it is running the latest java 7jdk

try java 8. Either the one from oracle or openJDK. The vanilla launcher (and thus also curse) nowadays comes with its own java which is java 8 and as a result modders use that.
