So me and my friends on a private server have started to set up some farms, one of which is going to be a chicken farm to collect eggs. Now I know we can do the old putting the chickens over a hopper but we don't like that, we want something more visual.

I recently heard (and after some research) that MFR Ranchers used to collect eggs in 1.6.4, so I was wondering if this still happened in 1.7.10?

Pretty sure the Rancher thing still works.
You can also do Gather golems or any combo of blocks that sucks in loot and grabs items.

3x3 hay bales, surround with wood planks of choice.
Then layer 2 rows of Iron bars in a 5x5 on the wood, you now have a cage. Top as you like, would suggest an outer ring of covers and a 3x3 of the next size up, cannot remember the name. Replace one of these with a trap door and you can add more chickens easily if needed.

Put an XU transfer node under the middle hay bale with 4-6 world interaction upgrades to collect drops and pipe to barrels for Eggs and feathers. You might want an over flow chest or trashcan for the extra garbage this kind of system always seems to collect, zombie and skeleton bits and the like.

Why Hay bales? Do they just look cool or is there any other reason? Sorry for noob question :)

I suggest an EnderIO vacuum chest set into the floor for collecting the eggs. Works for farms up to 11x11 - more chicken than you'll probably ever need would fit in there - and doesn't need any power. Gathering golems also work. Build everything else as "visually fitting" as you like. Don't use dirt or grass floors since "friendly predators" can spawn there. I tend to use wooden floors.

Hay bales look cool and fitting.

I agree with the ender io vacuum chest except for the unadjustable size.

4-6 chickens in a 5x5 cage will net you 3-4 stacks of 16 per real hour, more then you will likely ever use much less need. An 11x11 will collect a huge amount of junk or make Eggs so fast even a standalone world would cry.

I'll be honest, it probably isn't the visual you're looking for but mine is just a fenced area with chickens under a vacuum hopper attached to a jabba barrel with an ender upgrade. That having been said you could hide the hopper in other blocks. Also you can always (assuming it still works) put the chickens ontop of half slabs with hoppers directly under it. I think this still works though I haven't tried recently.
