Does anyone know what each of the items in the FTB directory does?
Upon opening the specific modpack (In my case TPPI) I am greeted by the "minecraft folder" the "natives" folder and the "version" file.
What do the natives folder do as well as other files, text documents, etc.
Also which files are important for the startup of the mod?

Hello there new member, and welcome to the ftb forums!

Okay, now that that is out of the way, to your question.

I will start by answering your last question first, because it is the only one I know the real answer to.

All of the files are important to the start up of the mod pack.
Each .jar file is a mod, and to use the mods, well.... you need the files
The text files are mostly config files. Those files can be tweaked by you to change how mods work. BEWARE! Unless you do your homework on these files, you can ruin your enjoyment. (this is easily fixed by re-downloading the files again, as they will overwrite any mistake you may have made.)

If you delve deeper into the Minecraft folder, you will find the folders for mods, configs, crash reports, saves etc.. most of these are self explanatory. Natives looks like java dll files. Just like on your operating system, unless you know what you are doing, no touch!

Thanks for the warm welcome c=

The reason I posted this was because my FTB launcher (strangely) was not working. It says I am out of memory, but I have 6 GB (5.85GB usable) yet it keeps crashing.
I tried moving all of the .jar and .zip files from the TPPI into the mods folder in .minecraft (regular launcher with forge) basically creating a different way to access modded minecraft.
However, as mentioned before, there was the minecraft folder (which seemed to be the equivalent of the .minecraft folder) , as well as the natives folder. I was originally wondering if I could just trash the natives and just play modded but that didn't work.
Then, I installed every mod (not all from TPPI, only select ones as well as additional mods) to create basically a new modpack. There, I got a "Minidumps are not enabled by default on client versions of Windows", so I am at another roadblock.
It would be greatly appreciated if anyone knew anything to help me.

I just reeeeealy want to play modded minecraft =c

Yeah, don't go deleting any folders or files, and even then, moving folders can cause... headaches... Best to just download the pack and work around the limitations.

A couple of questions here before I give suggestions.

1: What version of modded MC are you trying to play? 1.6? 1.7?
2: How much ram are you actually allocating to the pack?
3: What version of java are you using?

When it comes to question 1, this is important, as the 1.7 packs are fairly unstable still, and all could (should) use of the Fastcraft mod (found here: http://forum.industrial-craft.net/index.php?page=Thread&threadID=10820 ) The mod is not available for pack distribution though, so you would have to download it and add it yourself.

Question 2 is a tricky one. Unlike other "games" modded MC actually gets worse the more ram you give it. Try to keep your ram around the 2-3 gig mark and see how that works. I have 24gigs of ram, but only allocate 4 to MC.

Question 3 is also related to question 1 here. Depending on the version of mod pack you want to play, you may need a different version of java. Java7 is good for the 1.6 packs, but some have found it inadequate for 1.7 and have updated to the latest version of java8. Also, any mod pack after, and including 1.6 required 64bit java to run. If you are using 32bit java, you're gonna have a bad day. You need to get 64bit java.

Some have found java parameters help as well, but those can be a bit of a crap shoot. What may work for some, may not work for others.

The only other suggestion I've seen for making modded MC work better (1.7 version) is to use a program like MultiMC to "re-create" the mod pack you desire (found here http://multimc.org/ )
I haven't tried it myself for 1.7 packs, but I have read people are experiencing smoother game play using this to launch the packs.

Good luck!

Don't fiddle!!! Because trust me you don't know what you're doing...

Remove everything you've done
Download FTB Launcher here: http://www.feed-the-beast.com/
Put it wherever you want Minecraft to run from
Open Launcher
Go to options and set RAM to 3-4Gb
Select Pack(for complete noob I suggest Direwolf 1.6.4 and start following his Let's Play Season 6)
Let it Download
DON'T TOUCH ANYTHING!!!
Play

I agree, keep it simple. The reason we have an FTB launcher is so that we don't have to fiddle and mess around with stuff (unless we want to and know how to).

Having said that... each "modpack" that you download thru the FTB launcher will end up in its own folder under the main FTB folder. For instance, "direwolf20_17" folder will contain the new Direwolf20 modpack after you download it and install it thru the launcher. Inside the direwolf20_17 folder, you will see a folder named "minecraft", and inside that folder you will see a folder called "saves" - this is where your "world folder" is stored. I mention this because it might be useful to know if you ever want to make a backup copy of your "world". I make a backup copy every day, so that if anything ever happens to my world, I can restore it from the backup copy and not lose all my hard work and fun.

I haven't fiddled around with anything, yet it usually crashes whenever i try to open any modpack. Sometimes the launcher just freezes. I just downloaded the launcher so everything should be default.
I suspect the reason this is all happening: I recently installed a new hard drive as my previous one was corrupted and had a nasty virus. This hard drive should be better than my previous one, but it isn't. Not sure why.

To address the last two commentors: I have played minecraft before, so I know worlds. I've modded before and I know the majority of the mods and what they do. I've been playing modded for 2 years now, all various modds, but all this started happening when I "reinstalled my computer"

Anyways Cptqrk's questions:
1: All versions crash, so i guess both?
2: Everything should be the default, so the default ram.
3: I currently have a 64bit computer with 64bit Java.

In the meantime, I've been manually installing mods and playing them using the default minecraft launcher. It seems to work fine, but can only handle very few mods. My computer probably just cannot handle the massive amounts of mods in each pack. What I don't get is that everything should work, all the mods, everything.

Thanks for all you guy's help, greatly appreciated.

Double check the allocated ram, just to be on the safe side.

Granted, with only 5 gigs available, it may be causing some of your issues, as the FTB packs normally require 4gigs, thus leaving only 1 gig for your operating system, anti-virus etc etc..
Speaking of anti-virus, check that as well, make sure that your anti-virus isn't blocking something to do with the FTB launcher/packs. I remember at one time (don't know if it still is this way) Norton thought the FTB launcher was a virus and auto quarantined it. LOL

K, I have allocated 4 gigs to FTB.
my antivirus happens to be chinese which I cannot read so I'll have to get my parents to help.
The antivirus may be the problem cus whenever something pops up, I usually just ignore it =/
