So i'm currently using the mindcrack modpack and one thing that worries me is if the pack is updated could that break my save game? An even worse thing would be removal of one of the mods in the pack in the future.

Is there a way to block updates? They seem automatic to me without asking the user to confirm updating either.
 
The long testing period before an update is to try to avoid just that happening. That said, it's always a good idea to import your world to MultiMC and update as you see fit.
 
Updating to multi MC is fine, but if you just back up your world before updating, you'll be fine. If you don't like the changes in the update, you can downgrade in the launcher
