My wife just picked up a new laptop, same model as mine but one rev newer. We're playing Direwolf20 on a server hosted on my home network. I have no problem connecting and playing, nor do several others who play remotely. On her brand new machine, however, my wife gets this error every few minutes:

Internal exception: java.net.SocketException: Connection reset

She can immediately sign back in, but it's intensely annoying. I've tried:
  • uninstalling and reinstalling java, including older versions and the experimental new builds
  • completely redownloaded FTB from scratch
  • made sure there are no erroneous network adapters enabled
  • ensured that I have the current network drivers
  • reset winsock on the system
  • rebooted the router, the server instance, and the server itself.
Nothing has had any significant impact, and I'm running out of ideas to try. The only real difference between her machine and mine is that hers is running windows 8 and mine is 7, but I don't want to jump into a format unless I exhaust every other option. Can anyone make any further recommendations?

Thank you!

re you using ethernet? this error is caused by slow connection, which on a local network, ethernet is a good solution.

Its wireless, but her lappy is a newer version of mine, which has no issues. Wireless speed shouldnt be a problem.

You sure you don't just have spotty WiFi? Try changing what channel the wireless network is using.

Edit: Actually, one other thing comes to mind -- being a laptop, what kind of switch does it have for physically turning off the wifi? If it's a toggle, see if she might not be accidentally bumping it ever so slightly during normal play; even just a light bump on a sufficiently sensitive switch might turn the wifi off... and back on again after a moment, which is enough to interrupt a continuous connection like a gaming session.

Edit again: finally, being a brand new machine, try sending it under warranty for "spotty wifi". Might not do anything, but they might find something.

Wifi is dodgy at best, packet loss and gaming isn't the best combo, try ethernet then check for viruses hijacking the connection or an overzealous firewall trying to save you from the horrors of java.

Normal browsing has been fine. I just tried starting a test 1 gig download and it crashes the router every 15 seconds or so. So, issue isnt minecraft at least. Thanks for the input guys.

SEE! WIFI IS THE DEVIL! (use ethernet, i really improves this kind of thing.)
