So ever since I started playing FTB, I've had a problem where randomly, every once in a while, the game would get extremely slow. I don't mean low FPS, but rather it would run normal for a couple of seconds, then it would freeze for a second and then run normal again, and freeze, and repeat. Sometimes this would be worse: it could freeze for a couple of seconds and then go on as normal. I've noticed that while this was happening, everything else I was running (usually watching a YouTube video while playing) would experience the same slowness.

This didn't happen very frequently, so I just ignored. But yesterday I updated to Mindcrack 8.1.1 (I was using 8.0.1), and it has gotten much worse, like this happens every once in a while, and to fix it I have to restart the game. Today, during a particularly bad one of these freezes, the game just crashed. Has anyone ever experienced anything similar and/or know how to fix it?

Did you get a crash report, or did it just quit?

I've experienced this since Mindcrack was released in the FTB Launcher. Closing the world and reopening it doesn't fix it, I have to close the client and restart. Normal gameplay for about 5 seconds, then completely freeze for a second, and repeat.

Check the console when that is happening. Are you getting any warnings about the world leaking, or memory connection overburdened?

I usually see this on my buddy's machine when he goes back and forth between the nether or mystcraft ages. The video memory cache is the problem, I believe, but either way restarting MineCraft fixes it for him.

It may make sense to try entirely removing FTB (making SURE to backup your world if you are playing on single player!), and reinstalling.

Reinstalling FTB didn't help. I checked the console and, indeed, I got the following message: "Detected leaking worlds in memory. There are 4 worlds that appear to be persisting. A mod is likely caching the world incorrectly " followed by two messages about a world leaking. A little bit after that the freezing started to happen. At first it wasn't too bad, but then it got progressively worse.

Have you installed mystcraft and made any ages? if not go into your save folder and delete any DIM folders apart from DIM1 DIM-1 and DIM7 (nether, end, and twilight forest respectively). I had the same problem with a self mademod set i had before ftb and it solved my issues. and my fps doubled

I remember in one of DW20's videos, someone was talking about a mod causing that. Was it Rei's Minimap? Try disabling that. Chicken Chunks affects world loading as well so maybe try that if disabling Rei's didn't help.

I haven't been to Twilight Forest nor any Mystcraft ages, only the Nether. I get the error every now and then about the world leaking.

Having the same issue here : (. None of the fixes above work for me. The slow down happens even in new worlds after a few seconds. Both direwolf and minecrack have the same issue.

I think disabling Rei's minimap may have fixed it, still not sure though. The issue now is, how to fix the problem without disabling Rei's minimap? You forget how much you depend on it until it's gone.

Which is the only reason I haven't disabled it yet, it's very handy. I think the problem lies in the way it reads the chunks, or something. So no fix until Rei addresses it.

OP had success with disabling Rei's Minimap, have you tried that?

I had a similar problem, and I fixed it by adding:

-XX:MaxPermSize=128m

To the additional Java parameters under advanced options. This may or may not help, but I suppose it's worth a shot.

yeah i dissabled Rei's and chicken chunks and still got really laggy or slow after a few seconds of play... gonna try the above code now..

on another note i used to be able to set the GB or MB used by the game through the launcher, but now i can only go up to 1GB... i used to set it to 5GB.

I had a bunch of issues after the update but it turned out that they were related to Optifine and some of its render settings. After removing it I stopped having crashes and out of memory issues.

I'm not sure what fixed it but I reinstalled java to 64 bit and the FTB by deleting all the files related to the downloaded mods.

I just wanted to mention that the additional Java command line parameter did not work. To date, the only thing that has worked has been disabling Rei's minimap.
