FPS problems

I have a good pc and i was wondering if there was anything i could do bring up my fps because when i get around a good amount of machines for ex. when i get a good ways into a world i go from 60 fps to lagging and on a server with machines i have steady 30 and under to lagging. So if you do not mind pls tell me what i can do to fix this.

pc specs
amd quad core 3.10 GHZ
14 gigs of ram
msi twin frozer 3 amd 7850 oc
120 gig ssd that os runs on
1 terabyte hard disk drive that ftb runs on
asus motherboard

For the new 1.6 packs I have found that allocating 2GB while using a texture pack is no longer enough. So if that is the case, set it up to 3GB(maybe 4GB MAX! if 128x. DONT! allocate the whole thing thinking it will help. It will make it MUCH worse.). If you use the JVM arguments make sure to modify them accordingly.
