FPS problem

I'm having some fps problem. Right now i have a real stupid pc!
On a server i have about 50 fps with min. graphics. When playing on single player, i rarely get 10 fps ... and it just goes from 1 to 10 and from 10 to 1 continously.

Which version of Minecraft?

When you are on multiplayer, the vast majority of world calculations are done on the server. Your client handles rendering, and a few local things, and that is it.

When you are on singleplayer, you are doing ALL calculations as you are running the server alongside the client.

I have heard claims that running a dedicated server for single player is better than running the server through MineCraft itself, so you may want to look into that.
