Southerners? Because according to that movie, we were all vamps in the civil war...

nah, I referred to a book. In that book there where 2 sorts of blood sucking human like beings, the vampires and the things I always forget the name from.
Vampires made sure the blood was clean and often got the blood in non harmfull ways
while the others got it in the ways you are more familiar with.
They however made sure the blame was on the vampires and I believe even gave some of their powers to humans to fight them.

I've vaguely heard of that. Unfortunately, a cursory Google search couldn't recover under title. This has reminded me of my favorite mythical creature however: el chupacabra.
