For slowpoke to evolve to slowbro a shellder has to be in the same party, they clamp onto the slowpoke tail and become the spiral shell you see. Hence the Shellfish part.

No mention of a shelder even in the latest generation. The shellder thing is just lore. Nothing but. In lore, the slowpoke evolves by sticking its tail into a river and having a shellder clamp onto it. This causes both the slowpoke and shellder to evolve symbiotically.

From the same site as you just quoted "An attached Shellder won't let go because of the tasty flavor that oozes out of its tail." As is i went by the anime for it not the game.
