Hey Everyone,

I'm new to FTB so I am not sure what I'm doing with a lot of the mods,
I'm trying Monster with my friends (I am hosting a server)... what are some things we should work on first?

Tinkers Construct is good early game (if it's in Monster, I can't recall). You can find info on it in the wiki, which is a button near top left of this page.

And if you like watching Youtube videos, you can follow Direwolf20's Lets Play where he covers using alot of mods. He uses the Direwolf20 modpack for his Lets Play, but many of the mods are common in most packs. dw20s latest videos are of Minecraft 1.7.10, go back a few seasons for 1.6.4 mods, tho many are fundamentally the same between versions.

Yep, I second that suggestion - first thing I do is get 2 stacks of clay, sand, and gravel, find some fuel and cook up my Tinker's Grout. I'm talking the very first day. I collect a little wood, make a wood pickaxe, mine some cobblestone, make a full set of cobble tools and then off I go hunting for the 3 stooges (clay, sand and gravel hehe). The Tinker's Construct (TiC or TiCo) tools are all so great, you really want to make them as soon as possible. And process all your ores in the Smeltery too - it will double them for ya. Other than that, you're pretty much free to head in whatever direction you prefer - industrialization, magic, farming. Your preference will really determine which mods you will focus on most during early game. I think for Monster it will be Thaumcraft for magic, Thermal Expansion for Industrialization and Pam's Harvest is a big food/farm mod (especially if Monster has "Hunger Overhaul" mod which I'm not certain it does).

I would recommend setting a bit of time aside and watching some of Direwolf20's 1.6 series. It is not identical to Monster, but pretty close. You dont have to copy him(I strongly suggest you don't, too many blindly follow him), but he is very good at explaining mods and show things. There is a lot to watch and you probably don't want to go through it all. Start out slowly. Watch the beginning. Use NEI(the search thingy ingame), google stuff that looks interesting. Wikis are still #1 source of information IMO. And just experiment and have fun.

There is no shame in starting out semi vanilla and slowly adding new cool things you find out. You cannot absorb all the mods all at once. You might never be able to mater all of them, there is a lot to know about so much(I am still learning every day here on the forum about mods I have played with for years).

Tinker's Construct is probably a very good mod to start with, for many reasons:
  • It doesn't contain too many blocks/items
  • You get books explaining how the mod works
  • You need only basic materials to get started (lava being maybe the most difficult one :) )
  • You can make very good tools for later (even mid-end-game, I still use TiCo tools)
  • It will double your ores
Then, it's totally up to you ! What do you like the most ? Magic, tech, nature ?

The tech mods are usually easy to understand. Just go through NEI and you will quickly see what you need and how to get it (they're just a whole bunch of recipes, after all). Thermal Expansion is probably the one you wanna try first. It's not complicated and you will be able to play with the ducts to transport items, fluids etc.
Magic mods, however, are maybe less easy to start with. I mean sure, ThaumCraft and probably other mods also have books to help you, but I would highly recommend you watch some Let's Play / Spotlights before (like it's been said, the Direwolf20 ones are very good).

Anyway, welcome to the FTB world, and I hope you'll enjoy !
