So im setting up a lava-can automatic system, and need a way to extract only empty cans from and ender chest with both lava and empty cans. I know I could use logistics pipes, but am not at that stage of the game yet. Any other solutions?

Use mfr rancher and get ink sac from squid, put that into a bio reactor i think, and make biofuel for boiler

To the OP (and anyone else): There are currently several packs for 1.4.7, 1.5.2 and now 1.6.4. The answer to the question you proposed would likely be at least slightly different for each of those packs. Pro-tip: when posting a question like this, tell us what pack you're using!
