The main reason that many people use the hobbyist steam engine over the TE engine is due to seeing other people using it, however when run for an extended period of time, it is considerably more efficient in terms of fuel used - power generated.
However, for short runs, the TE engines wins due to higher power output and no heat up.

Also, at least in the version I compared the two, the TE engine ate water a LOT faster, and couldn't be refilled with buckets, either of which may be remedied by now.

Ooh neat. Like that crank-powered-macerator thing(I've only used that thing once, not sure what it's called). Perfect for that minimalist-hippie-environment-friendly build.
The crank thing is the quartz grinder from AE

I just recently found out you can kill yourself with those things, lol. If you wind one too far, you get 'killed by a loose spring'.

Well that explains why I can't find it in my Magic World world.

I just recently found out you can kill yourself with those things, lol. If you wind one too far, you get 'killed by a loose spring'.
Good to know, had no idea. Not that dying in your base is a big deal, but one of the perks of those things is you can take it mining with you. Now I'll be sure never to use one near a lava pool. :eek:
