Ok, so there are farms in ftb, that's obvious, but the sheer amount of farms and different ways to automate them is daunting. I can't find a comprehensive guide or anything that tells me the merits of using one method over another. Eventually I would like to automate gathering every crop and breeding all the animals. I've heard the harvester is a thing, not sure what it does or anything, infact all those MFR ones look decent. Im.... Help!?

Minefactory Reloaded's machines. Planter plants plantable items on blocks that are above it, provided you have the correct block for the correct item. Defaults plants in a 3x3 area. Harvester detects and harvests stuffs in a default 3x3x1 area infront of it. Fertilizer, when provided with fertilizers, will fertilise an area in front of it. Default 3x3 area. Fruit picker. Picks fruit? I've not yet toyed with it. Breeder, when supplied with wheat will feed animals in front of it to make them breed. All animals are fed with wheat and they will like it. Default 5x5 area in front of it. Chronotyper, can be configured to detect babies or adults. Will teleport the configured type in an area of 5x5 in front of it to the back of it, effectively sorting the babies from the adults. Rancher, milks cow and mooshroom, shears sheep, sucks squids etc. Slaughter house, no experience with it. Grinder, instakill stuffs in a 5x5 area in front of it. Outputs regular loot from the mobs killed as well as monster essence. Still a lot more, I've not tried all of them yet.

slaughter house turns mobs into liquid meat, which is made into meat ingots (2 hunger), which can be cooked into cooked meat ingots (5 hunger)
there are storage blocks for the last two.
a byproduct is pink slime, which is made into meat nuggets, which are turned into ingots.
yummy.

Hi Samuel,

There are great MFR tutorials on youtube. You should find all the info you need in there and on Powercrystal's Minecraft forum page. Look for Wylkers spotlight to get you started. Direwolf20 also posted a 3-part, very detailed mod spotlight. Have fun discovering :)

Are these the most effective farms? Or would it be best for me to make all the different type and just see which one ends up being my more helpful? The main thing really is that I can automate it with Logistics pipes

oh, and autospawners not worth it.
the grinder produces less essence than whats needed by the spawner.
so you will run out.
use soulshards.

If you're doing a food farm, a tc3 straw golem working with a wood golem is the lowest maintenance farm.

And also surprisingly effective for anything you don't need bulk amounts of, they don't keep up so well with fermenters etc without running multiple golems (with speed and specs on the wood, the range on the straw golems is insane enough as it is but they do need Bow Ties since they have to be brainy in the first place for replanting) and in my case Xeno's lilypads.

Uh, just supply the essence by killing mobs from a normal spawner or animal farm. Great if don't want to farm for a huge number of source mobs to get your spawner up as you only need a single mob for the autospawner.

Wait. So, for instance, I have a skeleton spawner near my base and a couple spider spawners. if I put that in a setup where they're forced against grinders I'll get the essence out? Then using the essence to work a wither skeleton autospawner? Could I then eventually then get rid of the normal spawners and replace it with a slime spawner? (Not 100% on how mob essence works)

no. a looping autospawner-grinder setup doesnt work. spawner in>grinder out.

keep your setup, but use the autospawner to get soulshards in place of the natural spawners.
this lets you centralize your grinding area.

for the mob essence, its best use is in an autoenchanter.
dont use stacks of books. it will enchant the entire stack in one go. great if you want a lot of books with that encant, but otherwise not worth it IMO.
set up a chest with each slot having a single book, tie a pair of pipes/gates to inventory empty--red pipe--singe energy pulse.
so when its done enchanting and you pull the enchanted book out, it puts a new book in and gets to work.

you can also drink it/turn it into exp.
liquified creeper. yummy.

I don't understand what you mean by this.

Normal spawner > Grinders > Mob essence > Auto Spawner into slimes > Grow slines > Grinder = Net gain of essence?

no.
you have to use multiple nat spawners/soulshards to fuel an autospawner and have net gain.

A autospawner with a max enbiggened (green normal) slime (spawn exact=true) seems to provide quite a net increase. And DW20 did demonstrate that autospawner with random spawning slimes that get enbiggened gives him plenty of essence to play with. Mind you, he's using 4 vet stations ^^* Ofcourse, soul-shard's with slimes -> grinder are the easiest way to get a high amount of essence ^^*

I have magma slime auto spawner in the latest mfr version, and I do get a net increase in essence even with random slime sizes. It isnt a large net however. I need to see if I can rebuild my dual auto spawner setup without xycraft tanks. I had two auto spawners rigged up. The first had slimes to produce essence, the second had the mob I wanted to spawn. The second spawner would only turn on if the essence was at a certain level in the tank, thus ensuring there would always be enough to generate more slimes.

I am going to try and embiggen 1 slime and set the spawner to exact mode to only generate large slimes, and see how that works for a net increase in essence since I dont have an endless supply of lapis.
