I attempted to upgrade to 2.6; it failed so I tried to restore my backup, now the server won't start.

Well the server isn't getting the point where it loads your world save. Somehow in the process of upgrading the server you have messed something up (duplicated versions of a mod or some newer/older). At this point I would suggest deleting or renaming everything (mods, scritps, local, resources, config, etc.) except the world folder. Make sure you have a good backup of the world folder then re-download the servers files and re-install it.

BTW: Not related to the crash but it wouldn't hurt to get the server on Java 8 as well.

I got her going. Made a new directory, fresh install, server started, stopped server, put old world file in, started it, works like a charm. Thanks for your help. Solved
