The problem I see with quarry or other hole-makers is that they... make holes, so it's better to make a mystcraft age for that, but with new MystCraft it is a pain in the butt... Last time I tried to make random ages I get

Nausea age - instant scrap
Void age with red decay - that's pretty useful!
Scorched flat age - ouch! I feel like vampire.
Cave age with red decay and explosions - Boom! Boom!
One more nausea age...

IDK, it seems like you can't get normal age without finding all the pages you need...

Apatite is high off the ground. Above sea level, iirc. So you won't find it by caving. I know Alpine biomes have a ton of them.

There are also ways to increase the output of the apatite -> fertilizer conversion. There is a Thaumcraft item you find through research that will increases output. Also, if you are running an industrial blast furnace, you're probably wondering what to do with the dark ash that results when you turn refined iron into steel. If you run the dark ashes through a centrifuge, you get ash, which gives you 16 fertilizer for each apatite gem.
