:p Hi there everyone! :p
(>^-^)> <(^o^<)
I think this is my first post here, but I didn't actually check yet. Either way, I'll introduce myself for the sake of being personable and well-mannered. I go by the handle Phazed (or ThePhazed/TehPhazed whenever my name is stolen D:) and I play a variety of games. Most frequently on my screen is Dota 2... I'm a semi-professional player so I have to spend a lot of time practicing/training/not having fun etc. I like Minecraft because it's an easy way to unwind and get some alone time and "relaxation". However, the "pro-gamer" in me really needs to be challenged or he gets bored really easily and ends up re-rolling just to have that difficult beginning back.
So basically, I'm looking for quite a challenge in an HCSSP FTB environment... something that will keep me immersed and engaged for a long time while keeping the game at a relatively difficult state as late into the game as possible. I'm not worried about balance in the early game, really - the harder, the better as far as I'm concerned. I'm not a fan of GT usually... it's not "grindy" difficulty that I want to increase, it's the threat of death at all stages of the game. I do like that it makes the end-game significantly harder to reach though, so it will probably be a staple addition to whatever I use. My main focus though is that I want to ALWAYS be able to die if I let down my guard at an unfortunate time. I want to have to stay focused constantly. Constantly.
I'm a noob to modding mostly. I've used quite a few mods in my time, but really all it's been for me is reading instructions and crossing my fingers to hope they play well with the others. The plan here though was to create my own private modpack for this difficult journey. However, I haven't the faintest idea of where to even start. A few forum and Google searches for "hardcore" and "difficulty" mods got me virtually nowhere. So, I figured maybe the community could help me here. ♥♥♥♥♥
As an added note, I really hate the sleeping mechanic. I just feel like it makes everything WAY too easy. I remember playing *something* (can't remember what though) where when I slept the game simulated the passing of time. However, this inherently made it easy to exploit sleeping to speed up machines, farms, etc. I will use every tool at my disposal though to survive... so please don't say, "just dont craft it (or use it) noob lols," because that's simply not an option for me. If there's no way to make beds more risky and dangerous then I understand, but it would be amazing if it's possible.
In terms of gameplay, I'm in love with Hardcore mode. It makes everything so much more intense and immersive. Every action I make needs to be informed, and my awareness needs to be top-notch at all times or I risk losing everything in a split-second. However, even in vanilla Minecraft this difficulty doesn't last long at all - FTB makes it even easier, sometimes while you're still in the early-game stages. Even with basic iron armor, the odds of dying to something that should still be absolutely terrifying (i.e. I would poop myself if I saw a zombie irl) are virtually moot. The only thing that could kill you outside of pure stupidity is a melee-range creeper without blocking when you're not at full health... pretty easy to deal with if you have reflexes like me.
So basically, I want something that will be hard at the start and stay difficult for quite awhile. I'm open to anything, really, as long as it's compatible. I really like FTB, so I don't want it to lose it's feel. I want the tech, the magic, the depth...
I just want it to be about 20% harder. (>^-^)>

Thanks in advance to anyone and everyone who helps or supports me in any way! Love you all!

The go-to pack for this is Ultra Hard Survival. It has the private pack code "UHS".

Thank you so much, Vauthil! I'm loading up FTB right now to check it out!

EDIT: Seems like it's not gonna be the same feel as FTB with the tech and machines and stuff. I'm still definitely gonna log some hours - I haven't actually even booted it up yet, I just read the description - but I was hoping for something a little more content-filled. Who knows though, maybe I'm just misunderstand it because I'm noob. <(^-^<)

Edit #2: Played until the first night so far. Wow! I spawned right next to some semi-floating castle thingy. Grabbed two trees (replant! ♥), slaughtered a few chickens, made some tools and went man-mode. Phew... I surely was NOT prepared for what was inside! I mean I anticipated some spawners or something that I'd have to run away from but... three skeletons with swords, two in iron armor (one with a shield!?) and one in chain? @_@!! All I had was a wooden sword and (thankfully!) a stone sword in my inventory which I had to switch to mid-battle when my wooden one broke. Definitely the hardest and most exciting fight against AI I've fought since starting Minecraft, including the Mo' Creatures mod I played for a bit. I don't know how this pack will play out in the mid- to late-game but it sure seems exciting already! Thanks again for the tip, Vauthil! =]

Yeah, just wait until you see some of the special mobs from that pack. Lets just say that it's safe to assume all zombie pigman are hostile ;).

Glad to hear it's growing on you. Send all happy vibes to Wyld of the Mod Pack Team, who composed the pack and plays it regularly on his Twitch stream (http://www.twitch.tv/wyldstein/ if you want to check it out when he's online).

Well I've played quite a few hours of this and, while it is very fun, it's not exactly what I'm looking for. It feels a lot like the difficulty is just manufactured by making it extremely hard to have life points, and a single skeleton can be disastrous and cause you hours of searching for more health. It basically just seems to consist of intense grinding for gold in safe branch mines just so you can survive to get to the Nether... and once you get some Netherwart the difficulty is almost gone. The added content like the dungeons and mobs is exciting, difficult, and rewarding; however, this content is almost unattainable pre-Nether without the aforementioned gold grinding. I will keep playing it as it's very fun, but I'd still love some more ideas on some mods to make a more tech-oriented but still excessively difficult experience. Thank you everyone for your input so far!

Actually, it's a bit different, I thought it was super grindy and boring before I really gave it a chance, but soon I just realized that it is not meant to make health some sort of godly standard for how strong you are and if you lose it you're out of luck. All it is trying to do is make health an upkeep (like hunger) where you have to think about it rather than just getting it for free and not having to worry about it at all. Have you seen the Prayers mod? It is a mod that was made solely for this modpack. It adds a "Prayer to Notch" item which is crafted with one lapis and one paper. It heals two hearts when used at the right time (when the sun is at its highest point in the sky). It helps get rid of this grindy feeling to health and makes it more of a maintenance thing that you have to watch out for, as I said. There is a downside to the prayer though, it won't heal much outside of the sun's highest position, it takes a while to cast, and it has a cooldown. So, while it is a good way of regenerating health over time, during an intense battle against a blaze or while running from a zombie, etc. it is definitely not a viable option. Hope this gives you a new perspective! :)

Also, if you want a bit more of the tech feel, there are still a lot of mods in the pack that have that sort of thing. More furnaces add a whole color palette of furnaces and many of them have unique traits (Diamond = Fast, Obsidian = Multitask, Netherrack = Free fuel, etc.). Tinkers Construct adds lots of pre-industrial tech. You can build smelting factories that double the amount of ingots that you get from your ores and adds a tool forge that you can create highly customizable tools with. Thaumcraft and Thaumic Tinkerer add magitech with things like the tool dynamism and different types of golems that you can create with various upgrades and what not.

I had no idea about the Prayer item. Thanks for this! It will make the game infinitely more fun!

I just started playing around with TC and it's a lot of fun too.

I wonder if there's a server for this...?

Glad you're enjoying it :). I don't there are any servers for this modpack yet as it is relatively new, but I could be wrong.

To be honest I thought this thread was made by randomguy404 at first. (Da ba dee da ba di da ba dee da ba di for those who aren't familiar)

Setup would be simple, requiring a base server with NEI and forge on it. Just drop the mods, coremods, and the config into the new server and it should work.

So is this the thread for discussing UHS then?

I don't think it has a specific home per se at the moment. Feel free to start one up if you feel this one is an inadequate preface. =)[DOUBLEPOST=1377420313][/DOUBLEPOST]

UHS actually has a server download if you use the "Download Server" button on the launcher. That's usually more the norm than the exception (the most notable exception I can cite being Magic Farm).

A mod that I really think belongs in UHS: Somnia. There is a 162 version of it now, so that would be for when UHS updates.

Right now, I have been abusing the vanilla bed mechanic. Flat out abuse (take it with me whereever I go). Keeps the surface all nice and clean.

One mod that I really think does not belong: Thaumcraft. Yes, it is possible for a bad thaumatist to turn a PvE co-op server into a PvP killing machine (seriously, why dump a milk bucket into the cauldron? Have you ever seen "Danger!" as soon as you get goggles of revealing?), but in general: Flying harnesses, leggings that protect against damage (poison has no effect), harmful status removers (poison has no effect AND you get leg armor again), golden feathers (I think that was thaumcraft), golem automation (ok, that's just convenience, but it really increases resources as a result), traveler's boots, etc.

Yes, Thaum takes a while to get there, but once you do the difficulty is really "do I want to fight? I don't need to" and no longer any real challenge.

I agree to some extent; Thaumcraft makes it a lot easier than it should. The only problem is that I'll miss my Thaumium Tinker's Construct tools :p.

Hit the "Reply" button under his post and in the posting editor read it. Or change the color of the post and then hit the preview button.

You know, while they are very good methods that would aid me in reading the OP you can't disagree that OP using a better color in the first place (or no color at all) would have been more beneficial.
Also those methods open up the possibility of me accidentally re-posting the OP.
