I'd like to be able to extend the signal from a button press for longer then normal. Is that possible and what do I need for it?

Long enough for a Bud switch to activate on my Auto Nether Portal.

EDIT: Wooden Button did the trick, delayed it long enough for the Bud to fire and I have it timed to auto shut-off. Can't wait for 1.5.X of the Ultimate Pack so I can use flint in a dispenser instead of burning Netherrack. Or is there anything that can send an instant flame shot? Not talking about a fire charge.

Just thought of it after I posted. Thanks, man.

EDIT: Is there something that can send a double pulse to a dispenser with a water bucket? I made something but it's a little slow.

Is the igniter supposed to keep the portal open or shut it off when the button depresses?

EDIT: Figured it out, had to use 2 toggle latches and a timer rigged up yo an inverted redstone torch.

Auto shut-off is a bust as it creates a new portal when I get back to the overworld. Probably have to extend the timer.

It creates the new portal, yes. However, if you have pressure plates in front of the portal powering the igniter, it will end up turning the portal back off. Kind of like having a pressure plate just inside your house door: you open it by hand, walk in, and the pressure plate closes it.

State Cell.
You can make the thing last for up to
~2,147,000,000 ticks which is 107,350,000 seconds which is ~1,789,000 Minutes which is ~30,000 hours which is 1250 days which is ~3.5 years.

Repeaters ONLY extend the signal length not the duration of the signal. The button helped, but I settled with pressure plates hooked up to a toggle latch.
