We're talking about very early game, right? You can bucket in the lava and water manually and quite directly, no other contraptions necessary. It doesn't need automation. Heck, even if you want the water to be automated, the Aqueous Accumulator doesn't require power either.

Oh, you can just empty buckets directly into its interface? ( it shows i haven't used it yet, right? :p )
That's neat if so!
I haven't gone too far in TE because I'm too indecisive in choosing what type of engine in BC energy to primarily focus on.

Edit: Right, i forgot about the orange slot that's there. Makes sense since you might want a cobble gen really early for whatever reason.

I'm a bit nervous about derailing this thread too far at this point (bit late for that?), so perhaps the Thermal Expansion advice should go into its own thread? I've yet to learn how strict this forum is about staying on topic and I'd rather not learn the hard way.

The original topic is pretty much finished. Bronze and steel pickaxes have the same enchantability as iron so they are more efficient level wise but diamond is still the king.

The topic was derailed in the first reply already so no problem. :p It's good that people learned something new. So many different ways to get obsidian might seem nice but it's just redundant imo. When you have figured out the most efficient one you will never need the other ways. That's something that the FTB team must address, multiple mods adding the same thing in a different way means that only one of the ways is used more than likely.

Er, what? The Igneous Extruder requires no power and finding at least one gold ore is not a problem.
My apologies, I thought that it was like the other TE machines. And gold is VERY valuable early game. I'm not going to drop essentially a machine's worth of gold on getting obsidian, when it could be used in a pulveriser, powered furnace or the like.

But, then, that's my playstyle, and how I go. I also never got on with the "strategically placed lava/water buckets to make a nether portal" stuff. I find it's easier to make the blocks and place them, and I'm happy to eat the resources.

IIRC Iron tools have higher enchantability than Diamond. I believe iron tools have a 12 for enchantability and diamonds have 10.. either that or 16 and 12, respectively.

Wooden tools have something like 20, and gold is 22 or 24/25.

Been awhile since I checked the code, lol.

If you're going to be making the machine eventually anyways, then it at least manages to be a long-term investment. It remains a helluva lot easier than mining the obsidian, IMO, and Cobblestone generators are a big help for players that prefer building over burrowing and avoid marring the world with quarries.

As for other machines you can make early on? Thermal Expansion is great, but the only three or maybe four machines that could be considered "important" for the early game are the Pulverizer, Aqueous Accumulator, Igneous Extruder, and maybe the Liquid Transposer, though I have yet to find an early game use for that one. The rest are all convenience items that don't help advance the tech tree until later when you're ready to start making the liquid redstone stuff.

Redstone seems to be far more valuable than Gold in both Thermal Expansion and IC2, so it seems to me someone wanting to maximize their yields ASAP would be better served using the Gold in Electrum for the Macerator, Compressor, and Rock Cutter than in more convenience machines, in order to save on Redstone Dust until you can greatly boost its yield by throwing the ore into the Macerator.

My favorite progression (ignoring the possibility of getting lucky with an early Fortune III):
The Pulverizer takes 2 Gold Ore before it can double your output, then use the next piece of Gold Ore to make the Aqueous Accumulator to supply a TE Steam Engine for your Pulverizer, and make the Igneous Extruder to start making your obsidian for enchanting and for heading into the Nether for Blast Furnace materials for Steel. 3 more Gold Ore would be mixed into Electrum to save on Redstone via GregTech Electrum recipes until you've got a Macerator and Compressor to make Diamonds and then make the Rock Cutter so you can start greatly increasing Redstone yield in the Macerator. Some time during all that mess, work on getting a Furnace Heater running. Extra Gold beyond the first six ores would be used for a Sawmill and Conductive/Waterproof Gold Pipes to start on the framework of your eventual machine network, though the Conductive Pipes are bound to be replaced by Conduits eventually.
Though an Enchanting Table and early focus on Twilight Forest could pull shenanigans with enchantments without wasting Iron/Diamonds/Bronze/Steel looking for the perfect enchantment...

Tartarus.. I mean at work. Same thing really.
Can anyone confirm durability for the twilight forest tools? (steelleaf pick, mazebreaker)- you can get fortune II by combining 2 of them on the anvil. (the mazebreaker is the best pick in game methinks)

The mining drill is your best bet for preserving your picks, especially fully upgraded with a sizeable backpack. (if you wanna be really posh- ultimate solar helmet+ vajra)

There's also gregtech rockcutter, which will silk touch your ores for maceration (if you can't get your fortune enchants)

Yep. Advanced Lap pack with 1 million EU storage and you'll get a full inventory before you run out of EU. I even use the mining laser's horizontal beam to aid in shaft mining, and that thing is an EU-guzzling mining tool.

Yeah diamond has less but it has 6x the durability of iron. You still have a good chance for Fortune III.

Steeleaf pick has 132 durability and Mazebreaker 1562. The fact that they only had Fortune II made them balanced as you'd still be better off with a diamond pick but with the anvil's ability to combine their Fortune II into Fortune III they are OP instead as you don't have to use as much levels and you can save all diamonds for other things. You could also repair two in normal crafting to remove the enchantments and enchant the result but that's not reliable.

Silk Touch is only needed for redstone and glowstone, other things are better off Fortune'd.

I find the Thermal Expansion machines OP. 100% free cobblestone every 2 seconds? Come on, at least make it require an engine. It even outputs the cobble into a pipe without powering the pipe either. With that I realized there is no need for any stinking water mills or solar panels. Just make it feed a recycler that can then feed a generator with the scrap and tadah you have a passive generator that can't run out of material ever and is more efficient than other choices for passive energy. Before I found about that dirty trick I was planning on making an autocrafting system for scaffolds and I would only need to supply the wood. But now I don't have to lift a finger and I used less time and materials for it.

I would agree with this, with the proviso that it's only at the moment. As and when RedPower gets added, it has the ability to do the same thing much easier and quicker. Because the only other auto cobble gen at the moment is a convoluted miner setup, it's OP.
