Something that a friend has been asking me if we can do is actually buy servers from an online hosting company like from Creeperhost. While I am fairly certain you can't and have even tried to research the topic, but nothing has come up. Does anyone mind telling me if you can or can't? Thanks.

The front page of Creeperhost says:
It is Your server!
We don't sell you game servers, we sell you resources, you can run any game you want within those resources.

And I don't think other companies sell servers either, they only rent them out.
If you want to buy a server you'll need all the hardware and stuff and a place to put it.

Yeah, when you RENT servers you pay X amount each month/quarterly/semi-annually/annually and in return get access to:
A server!
Online file storage! - size seems to usually be 50GB, but that is often increased when you go above 6gb of RAM
A console GUI?
Customer support?
VOIP server*?

Anything with ! means you definitely get it.
Anything with ? means it varies between server hosts
Anything with * means you usually pay extra for it.

For CreeperHost you get:
Server, File storage, GUI - Multicraft, Free customer support - support tickets, sometimes live chat, and -unless they changed it- you get a free 10 slot mumble server.

However, I would NOT recommend CreeperHost, as I used them a while ago, and the server was terrible. It worked, but it crashed a lot, and for what you pay you don't get much.

I would recommend WebSound as they are extremely cheap, compared to most server hosts, but you don't get terrible servers in return. I have been running a 4gb server with them for almost 4 months now, and I have never had issues with it. Even when people were in multiple dimensions/creating new ages. It only ever struggles when people explore new chunks pretty fast (e.g. air sigil flying until they find <biome>).
Also, I can tell you now they are the best I have used, and I have used:
Websound
MossyCobble
FragNet
CreeperHost
<server host no longer exists>
and McProHosting.
And out of all of them, I would definitely recommend WebSound.

I know you weren't asking for a server host suggestion, but it's always best to suggest before you make a bad purchase. Especially if you were to buy a 12gb server with a host, only to find it crashes every 20 minutes. (which is basically what happened with CreeperHost)

You can do colo where you buy your own dedicated server box, set it up, and pay to have it kept in a datacenter and hosted there on their better infrastructure.

Or host it on your own internet connection should you know that you have UNLIMITED bandwidth, a GOOD internet connection (I'd say at LEAST 20/20) and that the connection will be there 24/7, if you can't afford the datacentre

I do this. I got tired of $35/month for mid-range modded MC server with unpredictable performance. I built my own and run at home. Performance is now vastly better. Going on 6 months now and very happy so far.

I use Creeperhost and have never had a single issue with them. And I find their support better then any other host I've used(and quicker too...)

Oh well, looks like I'll just have to rent for us. Also I do not want to use creeperhost, their prices are insane. $10 for a server that can barely handle vanilla? No thanks.

Also, can anyone recommend me server specs that would cause no lag even with the resonant rise pack? The max number of people on it would be five.

You get what you pay for. Cheaper places have spotty service, in my experience.
I find that to be true in most cases. But Fragnet, for example have insanely high prices, and a 6gb server with them is easily trumped by the 4gb one I have with Websound

Yeah but, I do not have a lot of money in the first place. Especially to spend on a hobby. So I would prefer to have it cheaper while being enough for my requirements.

Well I think for £20 ~$30 you'd be able to get 5gb of ram with Websound.
They are actually really good, the only issue I have with them is their support system.
They can guide you as much as you want, but if there is something you really don't know, and you want them to do it for you, it will cost you a dollar or 2

Goddamn, that would be around $40 to $60 for me. I might as well just build a dedicated server for that price.

I said $ not £... unless CAD$ is like 2x USD$
https://websound.co.uk/cart.php?a=confproduct&i=0 $27 CAD/$24 USD and it will be pretty good, unless all 5 people try to fit everything in a small area (like you all do every mod possible in the spawn chunk, and the few pretty close to it)

vServers are not really a good solution for minecraft.
If you have dedicated cores of the host system reserved for you, then a small- to mid-sized server might run well.
But if you only have reserved 2 or 4 logical threads, then you are basicly screwed. Because other people are sharing those cores CPU time with you,
which tremendously impacts response times.

And nah we generally spread out a few hundred blocks from each other in order to plot to kill each other.

Didn't notice the £20 :p

But yeah, £20 is about what you pay for 6gb... But to be honest, I used to pay £25 for a 3gb server with FragNet... So I wouldn't complain, especially seeing as Websound servers are much smoother and their network doesn't get attacked monthly :p
