Hmm I can't think of what type of power gen I want to set up at first on my server.. Im runnin 1.5.2 and using hardmode gregtech..

I have all the mods in ultimate and hardmode gregtech plus dartcraft and some more..mfr etc ( I dont have powerconverters tho)

I don't like to use lava or really solars because I think there cheap lol..

But that doesn't give me many options.. I'm thinking the only real option I have is biomass or biofuel..

Is there anything new in 1.5.2 I might have missed to make early power gen easier?

MJ and EU btw.

I like setting up a bunch of bees and generating power from seed oil and honey. Takes awhile to set up though.

That might work a bit but Im talking early early game power like so far I've been using coal power and I've ran out of coal lol..

I just spent some time making a forestry multifarm maybe I can use that or make an mrf planter for some spalings for biomass..

Just hard to power the farms without some type of energy already set up lol.. Worthless using coal engines for farms... Maybe I can use the forestry farm for peat and feed some of the peat back into the engines to run it

Factorization solar boiler feeding into hobbyist steam engine? Yeah, it is solar, but it is only a trickle to help you along.

treefarm is about your only option until you get the materials for a nuclear reactor.
actually, you can get going on two energy networks with a treefarm.
use the saplings to make biomass/biofuel to run engines for MJ.
smelt the logs into charcoal for EU.

i dont have anything against lava power or the advanced solar panels (hybrids and ultimates i do.) so thats what im gonna be using for EU.
for MJ, its treefarm time!

Steves carts still cant use forestries trees can they? With forestries changes to the amount of biomass you get for vanilla saplings it kind of pigeonholes you into using a forestry farm which is a shame because I really like steves carts farms alot. Was that cahnged?

I have MFR aswell But I never messed with it before honestly. On my last server I hosted I didn't add it because I thought it changed the balance to much with gregtech. But I'm alittle more lenient on other mods no as I have dartcraft on the server, I kinda regret adding it tho it seems pretty op.

I have a tendency to make crazy complicated automated things but that is not easy without power gen.

Also I could use the wood for charcoal but Last time I did that it seemed like I wasted so much energy turning the wood into charcoal I don't know if it was worth it, maybe theres a more efficient way to do it then i was .

You can also use the compressor and extractor together to make ic2 biofuel. wheat, sugar cane, leaf blocks, and a few other things can be made in plant balls, then converted into ic2 biofuel. This can be burned in a generator (not recommended) or in a diesel generator. (You get the cell back if you use a diesel generator, not sure about the regular generator.) You can also make a coke oven and drop the creosote oil into a semi-fluid generator as well.

If you have thaumcraft installed, try researching golems to provide the labor to automate the ic2 biofuel production. They are great little workers. Even though they have a high upfront cost for research, once you make them, you don't need any more, and they work without extra input.

A watermelon or pumpkin farm also works well (although that is primarily MJ), but the extra seed oil can be converted into EU.

I just read a post that steve's carts drill require repair now? or something? and I'm trying to find out if they can use more then vanilla trees yet.. Anyone know of a way to see what changed since mindcrack 8.2 till the latest 1.5.2 versions now other then looking up every mods and reading its changelog haha..

WEll Looked at the wiki apparently there is durability for the tools now hmm...and I dont see a change log but cross mod tress is still a planned feature.. The factorization solar idea aint to bad but its still solar and feels alittle cheaty. I dunno I might dedicate a farm to peat I have to see how much dang appatite it uses on peat.

Theres an upgrade for SC carts called "Tree: Exotic" that lets them plant\harvest mod trees.

Also, since you have dartcraft, you could look at force engines for MJ to power your farm.

How would I get the force to keep it going tho? the trees?

I went:
Manually chopping trees for planks to power stirling engines and generators.
Stirling engines to power tree multifarm.
Logs from multifarm to an E-Furnace to create charcoal sent to a generator to power E-furnace and electrical engine (replaced stirling to power multifarm, after a stirling blewup and took out the bottom of my multifarm).
Stirlings to power squeezer and fermenter to make biomass from apples and saplings.
Biogas engines to power fermenter and squeezer (replaced stirlings).

Next will be biogas to power refineries, Steves carts farms, and maybe liquid tessy to biogas engines at the quarry(ies).
Somewhere in there will be more generators so I can work towards solar panels for the workshop.

I like SC for tree farms early on either that or I work towards hobbyist steam engines or clockwork engines which you get to manually crank
