Dw20 question

So I'm setting up squid seeds to drop squids into water over a slab/hopper.

The hoppers aren't hoping into chests and the squid plant seeds aren't planting.... Not sure if I'm doing something wrong...

Ok so I figured out partially what is going on.

Number one, kind of noob mistake. The plants require torches. I completely forgot because I'm in amooshroom biome and am avoiding using torches. I hooked up a light source and the seeds took to the water easily.

Number two which is a little confusing, the hopper wasn't hoping. It was connected to a vanilla chest and things for stuck in the hopper.

I removed the block above the chest so I could open it and all of a sudden the hoppers put things in the chest.

I don't recall them working like this. Has anyone else had this issue?

Vanilla chests don't work if they can't be opened.

I guess I remembered it wrong. Maybe I was using iron chests but I swore they worked before. Anyways it's working now perfectly, stacks and stacks of ink for my mystcraft woot

Iirc. A single, name tagged, squid, in range of a rancher, can provide rather a lot of ink sacks.

You know I have never had luck with that rancher, I don't know why
