Is there a way to "automatically" set a recipe in a Forestry machine (Carpenet, Thermonic fabricator) to use with AE? Or I should make one copy of each machine for every recipe I (may) need?

The latter. Hardly an issue though; the machines are rather cheap.

It is rather annoying in terms of space, though. And thermionic fabricators constantly drain power.

You could give each one a separate Redstone energy cell and use a level emitter to enable/disable the power as required.
The space is not an issue - I happen to have a HUGE room left after removing a wall-of-barrels setup, which has a ME network in it anyway.

Thanks a lot for the replies and ideas!

Just tested - the carpenter doesn't "recognize" the recipe encoded in ME pattern. It doesn't even accept items until I set the pattern myself.

That's weird :/ Umm, i can't really think something else. Computer craft comes to mind in this case when nothing seems to work, but maybe writing a new api is too much :/

It will, however, work just fine as long as the pattern is also set in the carpenter. You'll only be able to do one recipe per carpenter, but if the pattern is set then the ME pattern in the interface will work fine.
