Hi All,

I've made a Alumite pick, but am scratching my head over an early (non Nether) weapon to make with TC, was thinking of the rapier or the basic sword.

What would be the best(ish) metal to use? Given I am not yet ready for the Nether. I was thinking about an obsidian blade, but not sure what to make the handle or tool rod from.

Any tips most appreciated!

I wouldn't use obsidian as the blade because it has low durability. Alumite is slightly better than iron in terms of blades, but you might want to go with something slightly cheaper. You may also want to consider cactus instead of iron.

Obsidian would be good for the guard for the Unbreaking. Slime of either colour, if you have enough slimeballs, makes for a good handle material.

As for which sword, I personally like the longsword-the leap ability it provides is excellent for an early game manouverability boost.

Thanks! All done, Alumite blade, Obsidian guard and Slime handle, works a treat! :)

Yep, that's pretty much my early game formula for TC tools. Use the blue slimes, they're better than green. I killed a bat right away, so very easy to fly up to the sky islands and wait for slime spawns (or just dirt tower up). Hardest part is the obsidian but that's what the TE tag-team of Aqueous/Igneous are for - free early game obsidian, doesn't even require any RF power.

Also, find a Biomes O Plenty with moss stone, once you get to cobalt/ardite stage, that moss auto-repair is invaluable. Ardite isn't easy to find, even flying around as a bat (altho if you can install and run a resource pack like Sphax it gets much easier to see ardite).

I make a point of modifying with either a leadstone or hardened energy cell on anything that will take it as well. It eliminates the need to use resources on repairs. Carry around a flux capacitor and you can go for a very, very long time between charges.

I used to do this too, but someone suggested moss/auto-repair and I'm finding that if I space my mining out (don't mine for hours without a break), the tools easily "re-charge" themselves in sunlight and I don't have to worry about RF flux or anything. I always thought moss/auto-repair was slow, but with the odd exception of my manyullin shovel (which recharges very slowly), my tools repair themselves rapidly.

The best use for flux capacitor on a tool that I've found is to make a 4x Ardite Hammer and run the durability down to almost zero (4 Ardite components equals a buff of Stonebound 8 on the tool!) and then install the flux cap as the last modifier. You will have the fastest tool possible at all times, just keep the flux charged up. The drawback is that the flux runs out quickly, so in past games I've used three of these hammers in rotation with an ender pouch to send them back to base to be recharged automatically (energetic infuser with fuzzy AE bus).

I tend to find moss to be too slow for my mining tools, but works great for weapons if you aren't using jagged.

You can add up to 3 moss to make it repair faster, but each 1 uses a slot. I do it for early game iron tools, but switch to rf powered when I can. I also try to get looting on my sword as soon as possible.

I take the opposite approach, I use moss for my late game tools so I don't have to worry about continually hunting down cobalt and ardite for repair ingots. For early game tools, alumite is plentiful so I don't use moss, there's no need, I simply carry a TiC Tool Station and a stack of Alumite ingots in my "essentials" bag (a ProjectRed backpack).

And yeah, before I get into my "gather blaze rods and ender pearls" stage (which is usually how I go from early game to mid game), def gotta get a sword with 50 blocks of lapis on it for Fortune III. Real easy on Direwolf, lapis is extremely plentiful.

I take breaks to let them repair. I mine some, then go back to surface to unload and while I'm up there, the sunlight recharges them. As I say, for some unknown reason the shovel repairs very slowly and it also wears down the quickest of all the tools, so I find I have to be much more careful with it than with any other tool or weapon. But I've had my moss tools for the past 3 or 4 days now and haven't had to repair any of them once via an ingot. Moss is the boss. :)
