Hi All,

I thought I would follow up in regards to the 'Falling pigs from the sky' thing I had yesterday which whilst amusing did cause a lot of sever lag and made it unable to support more than a handful of players.

However.. something else.. potentially a bit more serious has been discovered.

There are now no squids anywhere, the oceans are completely empty. We have let the server run over many day/night cycles and have roamed out thousands and thousands of block from Spawn. Not only have all existing squids have disappeared but for some reason no more squids will spawn.

I do not know enough about the inner working of Mine Craft server software to be able to make an argument for cause/effect, but before the flying pigs we had squids, afterward.. none.

Has something become corrupted on server? Is there a file settings I should look at in regards to mob spawning that perhaps got changed? Has anyone else seen this? Any information that could be supplied would be most appreciated.

It's most likely due to the falling pigs clogging up the entity cap. IIRC Squids are the only passive mobs that despawn and they spawn further than 32(?) blocks away from the players position, but if the entity count is clogged, then they won't spawn. You just have to wait until the pigs stop flying

Thanks for the reply, today there are no pigs flying but also no Squids (sorry if this wasn't clear)... is there some data value that needs to be set somewhere?

Update: Not sure if this is important or not, but cannot get cows or pigs to breed either... however zombies spawn at night. But passive mob spawning appears to be
broken on my server :( Is this coincidence?

Left Server for another day/night cycle.. and .. things have started working again! Now seeing squids in deep water and passive mob spawning just started working.

You were right, it Must have been some sort of counter that needed to count down, thank goodness. People can now resume their various projects :)

It's funny how a server goes into crisis without squids squidding around xD

I've noticed it in a couple packs, squids just won't spawn anywhere for a period of time. After awhile they come back. It didn't start with the flying pigs. It started with 1.6.x minecraft and its mods.

We have the same issues on 2 of our servers, we constantly have 10 people logged in and logging in each day, no squid anywhere. I've heard twice people comment that "then they came back" but ours aren't.

As a result none of our characters have learned to read or write. Any help appreciated.

Can you do a server command to kill all mobs? Pass around some safari nets if people need to capture and save some of their animals.

If you have MFR installed, it is always a good practice to have safari nets made and capture various mobs as backups. In case they go, "extinct". :p

Could this be related to something I experienced in a 1.5.2 world? Basically amounts to some spawner, or something similar basically making it's own mob storage system (i.e. forcing spawns, carrying the mobs away from the spawner, to spawn more, and hitting the entity cap. Basically stopped anything spawning anywhere around me until the server restarted, then you'd have a little while while everything was fine before it all got clogged up again.

Might be, so it might be a good practice to turn off mob farms when going offline instead of it going 24/7.

I've experienced similar problems, and also issues with hostile mobs not spawning. MCPC+ had some issues with mob spawn code, and a few of their builds have had issues related to mobs spawning. While it's not a blanket fix, it's certainly a contributing factor for some of us. (We're using build 179, and that's spawning properly....build 180 is broken again.)

For people wondering I don't think it has anything whatsoever to do with entity caps.

Just fly low over some ocean, generating new chunks as you go. In the caves underneath bats will spawn. If it was a general entity cap issue bats wouldn't spawn.

Exactly. I mean for me personally, I've worked out IC2's cross breeding in order to get ink (an arduous and painful journey) however, this problem persists and it's not just any given modpack it's obviously something inherently wrong with the way all the modpacks are functioning with the mojangness of 1.6.4. A quick google will show the problem existing for many people playing tekkit, or even yogscast.
