I had this idea for a building challenge based around making factory city building challenge the only problem is that in the challenge one of main ideas is you need villagers to work machines in the factory for add realism and pay them in food and water but then I thought that it might be a bit over the top what you guys think

I Really need some help with this

The problem I could see is that the villagers don't support this. They don't interact with anything other than doors, and don't accept item except through the trading interface.

If you're looking at making a mod to do this, you'd probably be better off making a new "worker" entity for the purpose.

I thought of that but still I thought the villagers doing things could be in the mind of the player then them actually doing things

Well, if we're talking about that, then there's no real problem. City builds have been made many times over, typically on servers, but it has been done, and shouldn't be a problem.

If you actually want villagers running the machines, you can use them as daylight sensors and use pressure plates to activate the things, so daytime workers go outside their hut right to their outdoor "workspace", and nighttime workers stay inside to monitor the machines. You need to automate the rest.

hum that is a good idea for making it more real but right now I am just worried about how people will react to this concept

Don't worry about people, do it for yourself. If you do something like this only for the approval of others, you'll be constantly disappointed. That goes for. RL as well as gaming. ;)
Ohh yeah I am doing this for myself I just wanted to see if people would like the challenge idea if not I have a way to stop the end game in unleashed coming too quick

I'm surprised no one has made a mod where you can conscript or hire villagers to perform tasks.
You could have an item made of paper and ink called [Employment contract]. Use it on a villager and it determines the wage and hours and they become under your command. As for tasks they could do what golems currently do now, they could even turn on machines in certain conditions maybe even mine if you provide them with a pick. Programmed to place and take from inventories even use those few manual machines like the AE Grinder and clockwork engine. Imagine a Testipowered base lol through handcranked generators.
If you don't or can't pay them their wage they will continue to work for a little bit (to give you a chance to pay) then after a little bit they strike until paid or fired (testificate unions are terribly non existent). Different jobs could also require different rates.

Don't like paying the dredge? well you could go for an "Alternative" option. Instead of a contract you could opt for a set of [shackles] crafted from iron/steel with a diamond/emerald lock (Those testies are tricky need a good strong lock to hold them). Once you have them slaved they work for you like they would if you employed them only you don't have to pay ^_^!.
But Slavein aint easy and in turn has it's drawbacks periodically you will have to provide them food or else they just die (wage slaves manage their own lunch within their 15 min lunch breaks lol). Also occasionally you get one upstart get it in their head that "working for free is for chumps" and they decide to spark an uprising. Every testificate slave within range of the upstart will spark them to riot, You'd then have to beat them in to submission with a billy club or whip.
You could even ad a slaver villager (yeah I know it's tragic when someone exploits their own people for profit but whateves) that sells you a slave saving you a shackle (as they come with one).

Need that extra protection? Well combine an emerald contract and a gold sword you end up with a [merc. contract] use it on a brave villager and they will fight by your side (so long as you pay them lol). But mercs are at best unreasonable people if you don't pay them they will at best run off at a bad time, the more psychotic types of testificate will extract the payment from your hide... They are at first equipped with leather and and iron swords but as time goes by the money they accrue from you prompts them to upgrade their capabilities.

The currency you pay them could be in item form ideally configurable but default to either gold or diamonds, the wage rates could also be configurable.

The mod could be called Wage/ Slave. And would make the play style mentioned in the OP more interesting and less reliant on player enforced symbolism.

Custom NPC Mod.

http://www.kodevelopment.nl/minecraft/customnpcs/

it's up to date for 1.6 atm.

I believe you can even load them up with any skin that any PC could use.

But I'm not 100% sure on that last.

The other one is Minecraft unleashed or something like that. FTB Unleashed muddles the Google. Forget what it is but it gets rid of Testificates completely (aw), and completely overhauls the villager system. You can even marry, have kids, and give everyone chores if they like you enough. And yes, they CAN be zombified.

<<Villager worker mod idea detail>

I am thinking of making a mod like this although there will be no slavery. I'm currently in the planning stage and I am brushing up on Java too so I don't have many details that I am ready to disclose. It might not even happen. However, I have a couple interesting ideas for tasks that worker villagers could perform and I am thinking of having the player interacting with workers with contracts. Contracts define the job and the salary and I am planning on having a distinct currency. It will be a bit like EMC in that you sell stuff you make in order to pay your workers. The idea behind that is to encourage the player to make eccentric production lines to mass produce things. A simple example could be you set up an iron pickaxe line and try to earn a profit. Hopefully I will come up with a few other interesting things for the player to do in that process. The thing that I have been planning heavily recently is to do with a master forger villager that you might have a lot of interactions with.

Can we compromise and settle for serfdom?
