What kind of stuff do you need to have before you go into the nether? Seems like those hellfires and scorchers are quite a bit tough...pretty much one shot you and have 100-300 life.

You need the original diamond armor, which DRPG removes. Expect to die a lot, DRPG is served best with keepInventory.

What is keepInventory? a mod or a feature of a mod? SMP? It seems like i remember seeing some other mod that can do this but I don't remember which one.

it is a command (game rule) that allows you to keep your inventory after you die , you need to have cheats on

Get one of the anchors, preferably the whale one, and just pick em off from range. Feels a bit cheesy but works quite well.
