When I go onto the ftb launcher and go to launch direwolf20's pack for 1.6.4 for the drop down menu is auto on recommended. but if I click on that menu it shows that I am able to select other updated version 'after' the recommended one. I was wondering how long it normally takes for the recommended version becomes updated?

There is no set time it becomes recommended when FTB team is sure that update is stable. It can be a week it can be 3 weeks it can be 3 days there is no time limit. You can always update yourself and don't wait for it to be recommended to be honest most of the updates are safe and yes you may have a glitch or 2 but apart of that you should be fine.
