Your thought is prob right, Is the world loaded on the otherside of the portal (chunkloader orso)?
there is a debate atm if it works or not with a chunkloader
You need to load the age when you enter the world for the first time in a session, otherwise the chunk loader doesn't work.
But yes, the issue is likely because you're sending a cart through the portal.
The issue might be related to Mystcraft. On the server I'm playing we had the same problem, whenever a tank cart went to a portal from the nether to the overworld the server crashed. But also if any other entity travelled from the nether to the overworld. Also it appears to me that mass fabs also crash the server/ game.
