ive decided to go the thermal expansion path, but i don't know whats a good source of power.. right now i am using hobbiest steam engines but they eat up my coal. i was wondering if maybe any of you knew a good sustainable resource that gives me lots of mj power to power my thermal expansion machines. thank you!

Lava (pumped from the nether) can be used to directly power magmatic engines. That is a fairly decent source of power I believe, in regards to MJs.

As of the moment, I woud say go with hobbyist steam engines. Yeah, I know they are what you are using right now, but they really are your cheapest power source right now.
You could set up an electrical engine from Forestry, and feed it with Solar Power or Generator power. Solars are pretty cheap and should suffice for now. 1 solar panel per electrical engine, and once you get enough resources, you can start adding on solars.

I'd actually disagree and say go with thermal expansion steam engines. They don't output as much power but on the plus side they will never explode :)

For early game as a new player, you don't necessarily need to focus on sustainable. Tap an oil well near your base and start refining it. Use the Minium stone to get diamonds (for refineries) and obsidian (hardened glass to make Redstone Energy Cells).

I had actually never used oil before my most recent DW20 world, but I'm quite pleased with it. I tapped one small oil well near my base and it's been more than enough to carry me through to mid game. I have one small Railcraft tank half full of oil, another full of fuel (576 buckets), and more fuel sitting in the refinery, engines, and the liquiducts between them. This oil well is going to last me a long time.

As a new player to the modpack, I will warn you that combustion engines are very dangerous if not properly planned for. I can go into more detail if you'd like to take this route.

Hobbyist Steam Engines are for when you have a lot of work to do all at once, or get decent storage. They take just a little over two Coal to warm up fully, but once at that point they'll go a long time on one piece. For on-demand stuff, TE Steam Engines are a lot better.
Those should hold you over until you get a Survivalist's Pickaxe and a Diamond so you can make a Redstone Energy Cell to store the output from a decent run on a Hobbyist's.
