I am not entirely sure this is the appropriate place to ask this, but I am going to give it a shot anyway.

I recently came form FTB Ultimate 1.1.2 MC 1.4.7 on an MCPC+ server (in order to provide the best support I could for plugins like dynmap) and have moved to DireWolf 1.0.19 MC 1.6.4. I have noticed that (non recommended) versions 1.0.20 and 1.0.21 are available from the launcher. I run my pack as a live server currently due to the popularity of mods. IF for example 1.0.21 becomes the next recommended version Ii am simply curious if I am able to upgrade the server without data loss, or will I have to restart the world(s) to avoid block ID mismatch? Apologies if this is kind of a noobish question but in the past I have never run a server that was still in production it was always a server (like Ultimate) that was considered a finished product, but I lost support for that pack shortly after installing it. So when I looked for a new choice to move to, I went for a well recommended pack that gives continued support and updates. Hoping I made the right choice. Thanks in advance.

You can change mod pack versions at anytime, all you do is change the libraries, config, and mods out. BUT if you try to go from dw1.5 to dw1.6 or dw1.6 to the future dw1.7 you will have to reset the world then as many id conflicts will occur.

I would of course expect to have to do a major reset going from one version of the MineCraft core to another (ie. 1.5x - 1.6x), I just wanted to be sure that every time we received an update I wasn't resetting the whole pack and losing my users. I will have to be sure to make backups of my config directory as I have made several modifications to certain mods from there. Thank you very much for the reply, it was very direct, and answered my question completely! 73's to ya (a ham radio operator's way of saying best regards)

The configs will change in a new ftb version slightly and you will need to re edit the new ones, you won't be able to use a config backup with updated mods.

However in normal minecraft you can update from 1.3 to 1.7 if you wanted and the world would be fine.

Well that's alright, I know which config's I have changed and what values or at least to what that values are related. My main concern of NOT losing my world(s) has already been taken care of with your previous answer, the rest is of no particular concern beyond knowing I will have to deal with it, and now that I do, it's all gravy on the biscuits :D
