Hi all. What is the best way to dig out a circle?

I'm deep underground and want to dig out a circular room. Obviously, I usually use the Filler to clear a big cube. But I need a circle!

Do I need to get busy with my pickaxe, or is there a mod that can do this for me? (Using Monster 1.6.4) My first thought was the MFFS mod, but I'm not familiar with that AT ALL, so I don't know if that's possible.

Thanks!

I think you'll have to do it the old fashioned way. The good news is that you can use the building guide from Openblocks to help you with the pattern and what not.

Mffs could do it but it can be complicated if you are not familiar with the mod. Try experimenting with it and its power needs in a creative world otherwise bust out the pickaxe. Building guide will definitely help.

One option is to use the turtle from ComputerCraft. Though you'll have to program it to dig the right shape, or find a program you can download.

If you want to dig down from the surface in the form of a circle, creating a cylindrical hole, then the arcane bore from thaumcraft will do that. Just point it downward.

If the room is big enough to be a lot of work, you can use the filler from buildcraft to at least dig out a cubical portion for you. This will save you at least a bit of the manual work.

EDIT: It seems I've been ninja'd on the turtle option.:)

The easiest way to make an approximate sphere underground is with explosives. Then you can carve out the walls to make them vertical and end up with a cylinder. It just depends on how big of an area you want. You could also use the filler to clear out a square with the diameter of the circle you want. Then use the building guide from open blocks to build the walls of the circle within the area you cleared. You would end up with lots of space for wiring/pipes etc in the corners where it would be hidden.

There is this amazing thing called a nuke you see, and it makes this beautiful circular chamber.... :D
Eh, not always... You see, way back in the heydays of IC2, the nuke was pretty simple, craft it(it's a secret recipe, shhh!), plop 'er down, trigger it and GTFO of there.. now? Now you need ITNT to make it work. And actual nuclear fuel. So it's nowhere as easy as it used to be. Also can be very powerful(loaded with the "right stuff", it's apparently WAY more powerful then the old IC2 nuke)

Still suggest using ICBM for actual explosives, including Nuclear weapons.

There's some mod in MF2 that's called OpenBlocks I think. It has a not extremely expensive block called a building guide which makes a hologram thing of whatever shape and size you want, including circles. You could also look online for circle building guides and just use that info to make your room.

A single arcane bore w/enchanted focus can dig an 11 block diameter column just about from sea level to bedrock. If you actually want a hollow sphere deep underground, find an oil geyser & pump it out - I think the taller the spout, the bigger the sphere.
Occasionally I would check out Oil Spouts and drain them in the weirdest way I knew; with a bunch of cans, a glass tank, and PfF Barrels. I have seen(ages ago, mind you) spheres draining into OTHER spheres. Like 3 spheres under one spout usually(if the spout was big enough). Very neat.
Had Long Fall Boots for protection against damage, and a electric jetpack to get back up, but still, very cool.

Have to second mffs. You can set all kinds of shapes using that, even oval spheres/cylinders. You can even use it to fill back in the walls of your choice when you finalize on the size/shape you desire.

I've been working on many of my own turret designs and have often struggled with making the most space-effective design for my builds: The circle. When you make a turret, you have to make room in-house for the widest radial measurement in order for your turret to rotate the full 360. In a square/rectangle turret, that measurement is from corner to corner across the center. But as a result of that, you have lots of space not being used when the turret is in it's resting position. This is just boring, wasteful empty space that could be replaced with armour or weapons, or could be removed entirely to keep your craft more diminutive.

The circle, however, has the same radius throughout. When you build a housing for a circular turret, you can stay completely flush to your turret and not worry about jamming.

Here's a square in a square. The inner one with the diagonal line represents the turret in the housing.

The diagonal is the same length as the length between inner sides of the turret housing. That's the largest possible square turret you can make in a square housing. You can certainly fill in the corners, but at rest there is a large gap between the turret and the housing.

And now the circle.

Here, we don't have that issue!

Now you're wondering "How do we make a circle with square parts?" Well, you don't. However, there is a template I used to use in my Minecraft days that does the job extremely well.

https://www.minecraftcirclegenerator.com

You go down to the "Circle Generator", check off the square marked "Centered" if you want your radius offset by one (You probably do, we pretty much all center our builds off the middle of a middle block) then enter your radius. It will generate a circle for you to build out of squares, and you can go from there!

I have found this template incredibly useful in my builds. From turrets, to radar dishes, to cool looking missile batteries. Enjoy!
