Hey, I'm currently living in a desert on my ftb world, and i was wondering what oil sands were good for, i found i could use a distil to create diesel, but now i'm not sure what that does, any help?

Hey, I was wondering the same thing? I'm assuming you're talking about the MineCrack modpack?

I'm guessing it's part of the mod PetroGen, looking up.

The oil sand and crude oil were added by train craft and are for making diesel to fuel the diesel locomotives as a dedicated resource for the mod. Also note that you can get diesel by using reeds in a distill so it is possible to disable the the oil sand/crude oil with minimum harm.

I have been considering implementing them as possible fuels in Petrogen however!
add the diesel but keep the manufacture to the distillation tower from traincraft maybe? would be cool to have more than one use for the stuff, and it's common enough to sometimes be a bit annoying to deal with if you are just out to get sand for instance.

Oh god please once I found out it was for train craft (which I have little intrest in) I just leave it where I find it. If I could say turn it into fuel or oil even at a silly bad rate or use it in any machine to create MJ or EU it any fashion I would totally use the stuff. As for now I just have a lot of ugly beaches where I collected sand and left the oilly stuff behind.

I considered adding a custom recipe to my server, something like 8 oil sand or 4 crude oil blocks + bucket = buildcraft oil bucket...

You should add a recipe to use the squeezer to make oil out of it, like 0.1 per block, would be awesome.

I can get behind that. Maybe 0.1 for oily sand and 0.2 for curde oil stone blocks as they seem to be a little rarer.

whatever the amount, just not too much, but enough so that it serves a purpose, except filling two barrels...

Oh, and how to add those recipes?

Something like this might be better.

I didn't realise before my previous post that Traincraft can make diesel from Sugarcane and PetroGen is specifically for dealing with non-renewable fuel sources so using diesel directly isn't going to happen. Turning them into BC oil would be clearcut solution. TruculentMC's solution is clean and neat in that it doesn't rely on another mod.

Although using a squeezer is a logical choice in terms of machine functionality, that opens a can of worms by needing an external mod to add support for another external mod ;)

I will likely, unless balance issues get in the way, implement the recipes suggested by TruculentMC in the next version of PetroGen; I'll look at adding squeezer recipes with a slight increase in efficiency in a near future release (which I'll definitely do as I really like forestry).

The crafting way ends up being 0.125 buckets per oilsand and 0.25 buckets per crudeoil. Would probably make that 0.15 and 0.30, respectively, when done in a squeezer.

if you want to add a Block to Oil way with some work to it without extra mods you could always toss it into a Furnace to get your bucket of out put. Or Furnace to some sort of Crude Mix item that you could then use in your crafting square with a bucket to make the oil.

That would be excellent, DrCeph. :)
I believe you can add Squeezer recipes via the Forestry API, though I haven't looked at how to exactly do it yet.

So with a bit more thought, I think there should be an IC2 way of doing it, and a forestry way. An IC2 way is not out of scope of PetroGen given it is an IC2 crossover mod!

The IC2 way will go like this:
1. Macerate: 2x sands or 1x crude oil stone will macerate into 1x Bituminous Sludge
2. Shapeless crafting: 5x Bituminous Sludge + 1x Empty Bucket will make 1x Bucket of Bituminous Sludge
3. Extractor: 1x Bucket of Bituminous Sludge will extract into 1x Bucket of Oil
Some basic calculations show that this process will only use 1/6th of the energy that raw oil provides, meaning it is not terribly efficient, but still gives a net win.

The Forestry way will be simpler and will be just a matter of chucking the raw materials into the squeezer. The total process will be tuned to take about the same amount of time and energy as the above (non-overclocked) process. Unfortunately there isn't an equivalent of the squeezer in IC2 hence the convoluted method (which actually makes sense in honesty given the non-trivial task of processing oil sands IRL).

I am totally on board with the more complex IC way as yes makes more sense. I look forward to mucking about with sludge.

I was wondering if this would/could be in the Mindcrack modpack?
PetroGen already is in the MindCrack pack, and will likely be in Ultimate when that is finished. All that remains is for DrCeph here to code this feature and for it to be updated. :)

Just curious, is there a way to automatically change your configs depending on which mods you have installed? If that's possible, you might want to make oil/fuel worth less than normal if you have Extra Bees enabled since that adds oil producing bees. A single one of those bees and feed like 4-6 combustion engines, if that's a good indication.
