Dealing with natural TC4 taint in the early game

So I've been working on my base for a little while, setting up a small factory, when low and behold, it turns out that some tainted land has started growing literally right outside my front door. I haven't even touched Thaumcraft yet, but I really don't want this here. Part of my base is smooth stone and there's a starter tree farm only a few blocks away and I'd rather not see any of that get eaten by the purpleness. I don't really know what Taint affects in version 4, but I'd rather not find out until I'm ready.

How do I deal with a taint infestation when I haven't even made a wand yet? Suggestions?

Do you have access to server config files? There is a setting for disabling taint spreading.
 
I believe so. That would help, but does it also remove the taint or just stop it from getting larger? Right now it covers a 3 block radius, so it's not too large, but still large enough to have spawned an evil sheep just recently.
 
While only a temporary solution, wall the area so wandering mobs can't get infected. Eventually the taint will overrun the walls but it will give you a small breathing space of taint free mobs. Also, don't chunk load the area until you need to, as taint only grows when the area is loaded.
 
Thanks for the tips. I'm definitely going with the config option, since my base is pretty much in the same chunk. I should be able to wall off what's there though.
I guess I'll be making a Thaumcraft research detour :P Ah well, I suppose my factory could use some golems to liven up the place.
 
Find yourself some Silverwood Saplings, and see if you can get a tree to grow near the taint, it should clear the taint (I think, or it might be the nodes in the tree that do it).

I guess you could always pour some lava over the area too, that'll stop anything spawning, and might help slow the spread of taint tendrils.
 
I believe the silverwood trees have a chance of spawning a pure node which will turn a chunk into a magical forest biome (removing taint). I think the shimmerleaf flowers can also clear taint but more slowly. You can harvest them with sheers. EDIT: Turns out there is a bit more of an involved process to use shimmerleaves to clear taint
