I have a block A that I want to swap out for block B in the world, and back, based on redstone state (or more accurately, day/night state which I'll detect and transmit via redstone).

I realize I can sticky piston this, but does anyone know any more impressive/compact way in Horizons? Ready go!

you can install the mod qCraft and then use entanglement to control it. here is a link to Direwolfs20 updated mod review, sound like exactly what you want.

Got to admit its a pretty cool mod, can be a little difficult to use and setup but it has some awesome features.

Thanks, but I'm on a server I don't own, and it runs the Horizons pack with no extras. I was looking for something already in Horizons

What exactly do you want to do, somethin like remove glowstone and place stone as a light switch style or change the block of an entire wall. If hozion has tinkers construct you could use two draw bridges and an inverter, that way on retracts the other extends. Pleas excuse my spelling i am now on my tablet as it is close to bed time and have work in the morning.

Ars Magica's Light Nexus is a multiblock structure than has 4 pillars that can have different capstones. Though I haven't seen documentation on it, I noticed Moonstone capstones charge power at night, and gold at day. I want to swap out the blocks to get 24/7 generation, but I want it automated. Draw bridges are probably as messy as pistons, but that was a good idea![DOUBLEPOST=1388994455][/DOUBLEPOST]
Blood magic' teleposer's would be great, if you want all of BM that is :p
We do have Blood Magic enabled, I'll check out the Teleposer, thanks. Honestly i was hoping I could set a golem to pick up and place somehow, but that's asking much :p

Easy, you have thermal expansion and sticky pistons. In the ground have a stack of sticky pistons that engage when they receive a redstone signal, pushing up the appropriate TE blocks that will remove and place the new capstone. When the redstone signal disappears the sticky pistons retract pulling the TE machine back down into the ground. For a neat fun effect you could also setup a system that opens and closes the hole from which the sticky piston stack emerges.

You'll have to figure out a control system of course, deciding if you want an automated light sensor system or lever.

I am very aware that this doesn't solve all the engineering problems for you, but you have the idea of what you can do now and now you have the fun part of designing it.

this isnt too bad with just vanilla stuff. its a bit messy, but it does work well:

dress it up nice, maybe try and hide the wiring somehow, should be doable. pay attention to the distance the repeater and the block with the redstone torch is at, its important when detecting the proper light levels to switch at (repeater at 4 from sensor, block with torch at 3 from sensor). this is so the pistons dont fight each other.

ok OCD kicked in:

same setup, but using project red jacketed alloy wire to the pistons. cicruit is underneath, the sensor is right under the small hole. used hollow grass covers on the cables and the hole for sensor.
