I can offer a couple of suggestions. And I hope these help. But ultimately building is playing with it until you get the feel of what you are after. So for me these idea might work but might not be the look you are going for.

  • First the vertical logs at the top of the front beam look a little off. I would make the entire front beam one long horizontal log on the front view of the house. I actually like the horizontal logs showing just above the front horizontal beam
  • Add some variation to the stone brick.
    • Use cracked in random places and some mossy brick in random places along the bottom to give it an older house feel.
    • Add a few carpenter blocks here and there and hit them with two of your stone bricks. This will give that one a raised look so the wall doesn't looks so flat. Again sort of keep this a little random.
    • Add some windows (glass panes, bars or fence posts work
  • Some of the same applies to the inside.

I'm not the most creative builder either but these simple things generally work for me:

1) Don't make walls/ceilings 1 block thick! Make them 3 blocks thick which lets you have columns and raised/recessed areas which are much more visually interesting. A noob-cave is obviously 1 block wide cobble/dirt but after that build bigger and thicker.
2) Pick one or two blocks whose color/texture is a nice match for your build and hack them up with a saw and trim things out with microblocks. A little microblock goes a long way in busting up the blocky monotony that is MC.

Something that has helped me tremendously has been going to architecture design sites and shamelessly pilfering floor plans. Most come available with a picture or two of the building, or at least an artist rendition of the finished product. These have served as a basic paint by number to get me familiar with how to make things look less primitive (my work, not necessarily yours). Once I got the feel for it, I began experimenting with pallette to make things fit my world better without looking too gaudy. After that, I began to feel more at ease with architectural changes (mostly to better fit the landscape, but other examples exist).

Sometimes you can get plans in metric (particularly easy from European design firms) which make the transition to Minecraft nice and easy. Otherwise. I just ballpark the dimensions into something workable and adjust as I go.

Also, another thing that helps me is doing trial runs in SSP creative mode before I build for real on server. This allows me to pick and play with pallet of differnt blocks until I get a look and feel for what I'm after. The image below was done in creative before I built it on the server I play on.

Also, I'll second the idea of using pillars, stairs and other blocks to break up flat walls and ceilings. The pic below was from my last play through with thaumcraft on a custom pack. Also, be a little random with what you do. Throw other textures that look similar into the build. Chisel blocks are great for this.
