Good morning,

I want to made a modpack but before i start i want to be sure i can start without trouble.
If i understand all correctly :
1)i must go to minecraft forum and check who is the owner, creator of any mods i want to use
2)ask for permission to use them on a modpack
3) check for if they are compatible
4) and test it
can you please tell me if im right ?

sorry if sometimes my english is terrible this is not my native language.

You would only need perms for mods if you are publicly releasing the pack and some mods have a tab for modpack permissions usually stating the the owner does/doesn't mind you releasing mod if... eg. a non-public modpack.

You also need it for Private Server modpacks as well.

This is not true. The only time you do not need to check with the mod owner is if you are only using the mod yourself. If you give the mod to anyone else you are "redistributing" the mod. Most mods allow redistribution for private servers, but some do not allow ANY redistribution at all (Zhark's Mo'Creatures is an example).

ok i still need to clarify a few like the newbie i'm with that.
for example i have 30 mods working together and i want to purpose it for a beta testing modpack
i have read i must send the complete folders (include mods, configurations, etc etc ) but of course without minecraft.jar

hmmm i'm not sure i understand correctly that point
that's mean i drop all needed files, with a readme for explications, informations, configurations on a zip file i send that .zip to FTB team then they can approve it and "made" the modpack availible on the launcher
for example:
minecraft is installed on c:/users/blabla/app
i must zip all folders (mods, configurations, etc ect) and a readme with informations about the future modpack then FTB team "made" the modpack with that?

Actually no. For a private server you do not need permissions.

This is not true. The fact that your server is private does NOT mean that you have the right to redistribute someone else's work. Most developers allow redistribution for private modpacks, but not all. Check with the dev to confirm their terms for redistribution.

Dont forget the ATLauncher. You dont technically need permission for that as all the mods are retrieved through the authors links.

This depends on how large the server is. If you are sharing a modpack with 2-8 people, I doubt the mod authors would even bat an eye.

But you still have to get permission :p says so here in bold print "Permissions: All private mod packs are required to have complete permissions for each and every mod included. This includes api's such as CoFH core and immibis core. Permissions that have been given to the official FTB mod packs DO NOT COUNT towards a private mod pack. Permissions found in the Central Mod Permissions page do count."

Who said I was talking about a private FTB pack? If I make a modpack for a server I'm not going to put it on a launcher, I'm just gonna send the people the mods, coremods, config, instMods, and any other required things (flans folder, chocolate folder, hats folder, etc).

Also, quick unrelated question, why do you quote after your reply? It's very weird to read.

Because I don't like the reply at the bottom xD.

That's because you're use to reading from bottom to top, just like I'm use to reading from top to bottom.

Everyone reads from top to bottom so although you're a very unique snowflake, you're also doing it wrong. It completely defeats the purpose of a quote button.[DOUBLEPOST=1378284017][/DOUBLEPOST]

The whole "you need to get permission!!111" thing only originated from a couple of mod-makers who were pissed about modpacks not giving them any revenue through their ad.fly links. So don't believe their whole "this isn't ethical" hissy fit, it's just a matter of money. Which is silly, because without modpacks / launchers I would not have used most of them anyway.

Santa is kind of right and wrong. You CAN make your own modpack without permission, you can even run it through the launcher if you are savvy. also the licenses the mods use are redundant at best they can't stop you from doing anything really.

But as far as custom semiprivate/ public modpacks go FTB wont even touch your pack let alone host a custom pack code without the appropriate permissions. Also I don't think you are allowed to openly distribute the code if one of the modders use a license restricting it.
You have to do it through PMs and E-mail, all you can really say "Join our server, it uses a special pack so PM first to get it!". Like the server I go to.
And TBH I'm not even sure if you are allowed to even do that...

Ohh and off topic; @Dark Sith; Posting quotes like you do really messes up the context. I read from the top down (like most humans) when you read the reply you are like what is this referring too? then you either disregard it or read further and find the relevant quote. You are just breaking up the flow of your post is all also deviating from a concrete standard.
