All,

I've been playing vanilla minecraft for some time, but recently a friend introduced me to Feed The Beast, Infinity Mod. It's great. I've been playing for a couple weeks, but am hoping you can help me with crafting armor other than the vanilla type armor. I know the ways of smelting, and have a bunch of Industrialcraft machines. I'm trying to get past diamond and ruby armor in order to start gearing up for some bosses. Any tips would be grateful. The other people that I play with are in the advanced mode of playing and have forgotten such simple matters.

Thanks,
Bryan

Well, theres more to modded armor than just protection. Like flight, increased speed and night vision. Not to mention indestructibility and recharging. EnderIO's Dark Steel set gives a good range of abilities and is quite cheap. Personally I only use the helm for night vision, simply jetpacks chest piece for flight, and thaumcraft boots and leggings for the speed boost and runic shielding. Not only am I invincible, but I can fly, move quick and walk up 1 block steps. IC2 has quantum armor so you might want to try that.

Thank you! It looks like I have to craft Nanosuit armor first which looks relatively easy. The Quantum armor doesn't look bad either except for the diamond dust needed from nether diamond ore? I'm guessing I'll be able to survive the nether ok in the nanosuit armor then?

Thanks,
Bryan

This is not a canonical list of all the armor available in Direwolf20 - just the more interesting options:

Quantum armor is pretty powerful but you will need to dive deep into ic2 to make a mass fab to produce the iridium you will need.

Nano suit armor is a far lighter investment in ic2 but still requires quite an infrastructure to keep charged. It cannot be enchanted so leaves you very vulnerable to withering.

Thaumcraft offers a few tiers of armor depending on how deep into it you get. Thaumium Fortress Armor can be enchanted with Repair, Protection IV and can be given runic protection. The Void Thaumaturge Robes are even more capable and simply self repair.

Botania has an entry level armor set made from mana steel, which also, like all the above armors, can self repair - using mana from a mana providing inventory item - usually mana tablet or mana ring.

Blood Magic has bound armor, which diverts all damage to your blood pool. I think this armor when properly upgraded provides more mitigation than all the above armors.

Redstone Arsenal adds "Flux Infused" armor which will provide protection using an RF charge.

And then there is the Modular Powersuits mod, which lets you mix and match things to make something... awesome - and is also charged with RF.

Ender IO has a "Dark Metal" suit that can be upgraded to a powered version, Witchery has some interesting armor options and I see Direwolf20 includes PneumaticCraft which also has armor options that I have not investigated.

So many choices.

Thank you for this post. This is what I'm looking for. Since I'm new to FTB, Infinity, I don't know any of the MOD packs. Epidemia, I'm almost done making the nano suit - the helm is a bit of a pain because I didn't write down how many of each of the items I needed to make, so I kept having to make more over and over again. I'll be more careful when I convert it into the Quntum. I pretty much just want SOMETHING to get me started so I can handle some starting mini boss / boss and climb the ladder.

Thanks,
Bryan

I actually like to mix and match armors. Nano suit chest, and helmet, with Modular Power Suits legs, and Portal Gun Longfall Boots. No Fall Damage, chest and helm provide night vision and good protection, and the MPS legs keep them charged as you run around. MPS can also draw power from the Nano suit pieces to power it's acceleration and step assist abilities, so there's no need for an internal power supply, or inventory item.

Botania armor is excellent as long as you have mana to keep it 'recharging/repairing'. Blood Magic has excellent armor, but it's buried several tiers deep, so it is definitively not early game.

Lost as always
early game has a few interesting options as well with some utility. Namely: the Traveler's armor set from Tinker's Construct.

The 'wings' are leg-slot armor that give you higher jumping and some feather fall. Best of all, it can be upgraded with some feathers, slime block, and ender pearl to make you completely immune to damage. Until you get a nether star for wings, it's going to be your best anti-fall damage gear around! It can also be upgraded with 'Mossy' for auto-repair, or Fluxed for being able to be charged up using RF.

A Jet Pack can provide early flight access, and a Hang Glider from Open Blocks can be used to extend the durability of a jet pack significantly, as well as giving you a faster way to fly about. Jet pack up, then glide down rapidly. Combo with aforementioned wings to be immune to fall damage, just in case, and you've got a ton of extra mobility. The best way to survive an attack is to not be there when it lands.

Botania also has the Sojourner's Sash, which gives you step assist and additional speed, although these days it does require mana to run, meaning you might want to have a Ring of Mana and maybe an Aura Ring to keep up with demand. Pyroclast Amulet makes you immune to fire, but not lava immersion, which can significantly make enemies who throw fire at you much easier. It doesn't require much investment in Botania, a simple mana garden (such as I have posted in the showcase forum) is sufficient mana output to get them. You'll need some basic runes, but that's really about it.

If you are going into the IC2 armour, be SURE to look up the GraviSuite alternative versions/updated versions of the Nano/Quantum(GraviChest) armour. You won't regret it.

Until you're about two-thirds of the way into crafting the Gravi-chest plate anyway.
Well you can always start with the Advanced Nano Chestplate. That is a VERY nice midgame armour with a very nicely featured and fast jetpack IMO.

The GraviChest is rightly so(IMO) quite the endgame project to craft :p (at least with the proper difficulty settings etc.)

I made the nanosuit and am loving it. I'm working on getting the materials to upgrade it to the Quantum gear. This armor takes a lot of energy to charge!

I absolutely love the Advanced Nano Chestplate, if only because of the very fond memories of the Advanced Jetpack from Ultimate.
Btw now you can charge/recharge it with Ultimate/Advanced Lappacks from your inventory to extend your flight/tool usage. Same for GraviChest and Advanced Jetpack. And ofc you can automate the recharging of these Lappacks with some clever use of Ender Pouches etc.(I love to use the Random Things Player Interface to make it completely automatic). I just love not worrying about power when exploring or mass mining with the Advanced Diamond Drill/Vajra.

I'm just envisioning an SFM+Player Interface system that keeps me always stocked with 64 cobble, 64 baked potatoes, 64 torches, keeps my tools charged, immediately extracts and processes my ores... :p
Of course, I never get around to actually building stuff like that. >.<

Just stick the Logistical Pipes Remote Orderer Pipe onto the Player Interface and connect it to your ME network. Now you have access to everything :p

The tool recharging can be done easily with a pair of Precise and Fuzzy import/export bus.

Put a ME import bus on the Player interface set to extract all cobble, ore, dirt, gravel etc. from the main inventory part and set it to work on redstone signal. Hook it up to a Toggle Latch and that to a Wireless Receiver. Link that to a Remote and bring that with you when you go mining.

Job done :p

I don't use Logistics Pipes in my pack. Maybe I should, but... :p
SFM's really cool, anyway. :)
