So I've been running a vanilla 1.8.1 server and all of us wanted to play FTB. None of us wanted to lose our stuff though, so I tried out just dumping the world file into FTB. While most stuff was fine and stuff like granite blocks got turned into cobble, a chunk went weird. This

turned into this

I'm not really upset, I'm just wondering what the hell would even cause that.

Differences in how the world is generated between 1.7 and 1.8, if there are differences. Worlds typically are not compatible between versions without significant work (this isn't true if mods are not involved at all).

Looks like you had a chunk reset after biomes got shuffled around due to adding Buildcraft (which adds some oil field biomes) or BoP or something. Why that particular chunk would reset, however, is anyone's guess. Probably because some new Vanilla block in 1.8 caused the MC 1.7 world loader to spaz out and delete the chunk or something. Something like that would normally only cause the blocks to vanish or turn into some other block with a weird metadata (see what WAILA says about the blocks that used to be granite), but nearly anything can happen when something goes wrong.
