Connection lost

Was playing, a server locally running on my PC (much less lag than single player). Started to get some lag so quit and closed the client (have to do this about once an hour) and started again. New launcher version out, click yes to update.

Now when I try to connect to my server I get the message in the attachment:

What changed?

Minecraft servers are down. Nothing to do but wait for them to be back up

OK. They seem to be going down a lot recently..

As a wise woman said to me recently:
"They don't seem happy with the amount of usage that minecraft is, well using. Between the Yogscast/Technic and DW20/FTB, a lot of people have joined the craze. Probably stress in areas they weren't expecting huge amounts of stress to occur."

Wouldn't surprise me at all if a FTB update looks like a DDoS from minecrafts point of view
