Complete freeze of OS during load

Details of the issue:
When I try to start FTB Infinity my computer completely freezes. Everytime it occurs during a different stage of the loading process. I never made it further than the reloading textures in step 7. In the logs it looks like nothing happened, they just stop at some point.

My laptop is a Lenovo Z50-70 with 4GB RAM (+4GB swap on SSD), of which 3GB is allocated to MC, running Ubuntu 15.10. I tried this with OpenJDK 6, 7, Oracle 6, 7, 8, but it all did not work. Though my laptop specs are not optimal, the program usually crashes way before the memore is almost full. Does anyone have any idea what might be going on?​
