It's all the kids who are so used to instant gratification. If something takes you more than 5 minutes to set up it's considered 'booooring'
You can't really prevent most people going for similar setups. But atleast my cane > biomass > fuel > boiler setup is complex enough to automate that it actually took me hours to all set up properly.
Lava is a low tier power source, but most people never go beyond low-tier builds. That's the reason you see so much of it.
The other reason you seldom see nuclear reactors is that IC2 power is so forgiving and flexible. With IC2, you build a batbox and "job's done!" If energy control and storage were not so low-tier in IC2, you'd probably see a lot more acceptance of complex builds. As it stands, it's easier to just keep HUGE racks of batteries over geothermal farms or automated hydrobucket farms (have you see the Factorization router/extractor builds that use an RP2 deployer? You literally just extend the hydro network by placing the blocks and wire!) then use storage.
My current server project was BuildCraft First, and if you recall I came here and asked for help to stop my workshop from blowing up. In the end, I had to get creative with my system to ensure my workshop didn't keep blowing up (eventually involving an Item Detector, Buffer, State Cell, and a concealed override lever for those custom jobs). I was quite proud of the result, and I feel decidedly less enthusiastic about my most recent lava drive system (although I keep telling myself it is a
stopgap and a
service for other people on my server, and I'll work towards a nuclear reactor and electric engines soon).
I think the main issue is that different people have different opinions on what's 'cheesy' or 'cheating'. With all the people using actual cheats in online games (aimbots, x-ray vision, etc.) I am not surprised that a discussion on solars and the balance implications is pretty much impossible.
It's sort of bizarre to me that Minecraft has evolved such a PvP culture. The game is not a very good pvp platform except in a sort of Dungeon Siege sort of way. I rather like what UE is doing with missiles and turrets; that at least has a minecraft flavor...
I don't mind people looking up reactor designs on the net though...
There is almost no in-game documentation for reactors, so the only way you could possibly understand it without some external info is by multiple explosions. And if we're not in creative, that's probably not so fun.
