I think I just found my preferred way of collecting fuel from oil wells.

refine10.jpg

Hopper's full of wax capsules.
Down side is the energy cell doesn't last long. I could have a combustion engine supply the power for the refining, but that would waste 10 fuel, as its internal buffer is huge and breaking the engine when finished would lose the fuel.
I suppose if I could figure out how much fuel was required in advance I could just drop that much into it. But oil wells are variable in size, so that's hard to predict. On the other hand, maybe I could just bring along 5 or 6 energy cells, or whatever would be enough.

Ideas on improving this design? Preferably without using Tesseracts, as I'm trying to avoid them for the most part.

Wait, you can wrench a combustion engine and it keeps the fuel? That's awesome.

forestry has a pipette which you can use to draw out partial liquid loadouts from an engine. however it only works on biogas engines.

Dartcraft's force wrench can cause problems when wrenching multiblock thing's like AE's inventory interface. In short, be careful with what you use that wrench on.

Just use an energy tesseract ;)

He specifically asked for suggestions without tesseracts.

@Recon: more energy cells are the easiest way. However, if you have IC2 and a compact solar module addon installed, you could try a solar based local power generation with Forestry's electric engine. Use a refined circuit board with two tin and one bronze electron tube; this will yield 10 MJ/t for 35 EU/t. Now use a MV solar array (or hybrid solar panel) to feed a MFE, and the MFE to feed the engine. Since the panel generates almost twice as much power as the engine needs, and solar panels generate power for slightly over 50% of Minecraft's day/night cycle, this setup should pretty much keep the electric engine running indefinitely thanks to the MFE buffering excess EU during the day and using it to feed the engine at night.

I know some people don't like solar power very much (me included), but it is one of the few ways of having compact localized power without using tesseracts. Any other type of energy generation must have either its fuel or the energy itself transmitted long-distance, with the exception of the combustion engine which you don't want to use.

Maybe an Ender Chest on top of the hopper, so you don't need to refill it yourself.

Heck even a normal solar panel and electrical engine will keep the energy cell going longer. That's how I power quarries.

Your setup makes no sense at all. Oilwells don't last that long and you will have to move your entire setup every X hours. Why not simply refine/store the stuff in your base?

With only one refinery it takes quite a while till the oil well is depleted.

Still doesn't matter. I mean, if you want to make stuff needlessly complex be my guest but moving all that stuff around every time you need to switch makes no sense at all. I just have 2 tesseracts (power / liquid) right on the pump and that's it.

I usually do it this way too. But if you don't want to use Tesseracts you have to get creative.

Actually, it does make more sense to refine it at my base because I can draw off my battery bank for the refining power. I just need two deep storage units. One for the oil and then I will bring the oil home and transfer it there to the refinery and then the other deep storage. Its a lot more wax capsules but it'd be simpler. Its not hard to make an overwhelming amount of beeswax.
Was trying to get a solution that didn't involve tesseracts. At this point its pretty clear that a liquid tesseract would be the simplest of course. :)

Well, you know what I did in 1.2.5 when teleport pipes turned out to be broken?

Railcraft train with chunkloader cart and liquid tank cart. :p I think I built like 18 stacks of 64 tracks but I got every godsdarned oil well in my vicinity connected and drained :D

Can people PLEASE stop perpetuating the falsehood that TE will discontinue? King Lemming himself said it was going to be continued, just not by himself personally.

KingLemming also said that he can't guarantee 100% that there will be a 1.6.2 release. It might only return in 1.7.x.

On one hand, with how far away 1.7 based mods look right now, it might seem like a good chance for them to wrap up TE for 1.6... however, you also have to keep in mind the temptation of porting directly to 1.7, because a.) it's a huge shift and will break everything under the sun and b.) no more manually assigning and tracking IDs, that's gotta be an awesome feature.
