Ok, so I'm in the process of figuring out what I want to allow on my server. Trying to get a good balance between allowing players to use them, and server performance.

So...anyone have a preference (and reason) for preferring one over the other?

I would like to be able to set limits to them per group, rather than per user (so if anyone knows how to do that with the chickenchunks loaders that would be nice, as all that is mentioned in the config is per user)

Disable chunkloaders and world anchors and allow personal anchors only, that has several good effects on you as a server owner:

1 - If people want to play on your server they will HAVE to play to progress, not leave stuff running and come back in a week
2 - If people aren't playing their stuff doesn't get loaded and all the other players on your server don't get lagged down by non-playing peoples stuff
3 - The people who aren't interested in long term play will moan and leave, leaving you with the real players
4 - Using personal anchors instead of chunkloaders or world anchors means your server will not be strained as much

Personal anchors only work when the player it belongs to is online, you can set chunkloaders to online only mode but I don't believe they work properly.

Other things to note:

Portal Gun portals chunk load (even when a player is offline).
Quarry's chunk load giving potential problems to people who haven't a clue about turning it off when they go offline.[DOUBLEPOST=1380046199][/DOUBLEPOST]HAHAHA Staxed just realised it was you ..... for those who wont know this is where I play lol

You could allow Quarries, Ender-thermic pumps, and Spot Loaders, then institute a limit on how many chunks a player can have loaded at once.

Better do what I do! Don't worry about actual chunks loaded numbers and rather how are people them selves? If they're beating up the hardware then ban them and then replace until you got a community that actually cares about your monthly bills on the hardware. Bottom line don't limit chunkloading! Limit the access of the server itself to people that will forge a good community. Also get sufficient hardware to begins with! 4 players for every 2GB is a good rule of thumb, and make sure you get a decent CPU on it. Do that and you won't have server problems Unless your overloading the hardware yourself and/or the players are abusing the hardware. Fix these problem accordingly.

The server is more than beefy enough to handle plenty of players, it's not really the resources that are the problem. I just don't want to set rules that are too restrictive, but also don't want to just allow people to throw down chunk loaders whereever they want. I don't think it'll be a problem really with the community I'm forming...I just want to cover my bases :D

I'm also not fond of people having their stuff running while they aren't playing...doesn't promote community involvement that way

Maybe just this one change in ChickenChunks.cfg will be close enough ?

allowoffline
{
DEFAULT=false
}

Also, and you probably already know this, BC Quarries and some other devices like ExtraUtilities Enderthermic Pumps have built-in chunk loaders.

There in lines one of the problems as well. If they setup BC quarry and use a personal anchor at their base, what happens to the items the quarry is producing once the player logs off? Do they just spill out and cause even more lag on the server?

Ah, yuck, right.

Perhaps a stated server mission statement, i.e. set of goals and guidelines and a light-handed approach is best, i.e. checking /chunkloaders every few days for abuse. Would be difficult to implement a good policy.

But, you may want to look in ChickenChunks.cfg . There are some other settings which may suit your needs.

Yea just go light and change the config to offline mode if you wish automation to be halted during the time they aren't on. Quarries are pricey so the in built game economy will keep those usage down but you can config how much each loads by the chickenchunks config as well. However as long as preformace is good I'm going to let my players just slap down loaders of their choice (provided it's not just sitting in a abandon base and ect)

see, now that is certainly something to think about :)
