How do they do that? Just by connecting shaft power?

Shaft power yes. More interestingly (to me anyway), electricraft power. It requires a more complex setup, since world rifts work in pairs. But you can use resistors to control how much power goes through each connection.

Would you but a rift between cords?

My understanding is put an input cable in one, output in the other.
