i've recently been trying chocolate frames in my apiaries to get more combs, but as far as i can tell its vastly reduced the lifespans but they're dying too fast to actually produce any combs. has anyone else had this kind of problem?

Choco frame decrease the lifespan by 50% and increase productivity by 50%. So... it is very possible that your bee doesn't produce anything before it dies.

Btw, Choco frame doesn't change the yield of comb per unit time, I tested it before with valuable bee in an alveary using 18 frame housings. One bee had longest life with 2 choco frames and 16 impregnated frames; the other one had shorter life with 18 impregnated frames; both of them produced 1 comb/27.55 seconds..the lifespan of them were similar (around 8-9 mins IIRC)..

the main use of chocolate frame is with soul frames to speed up the production of offspring, well for me it is just seemed like a logical step.

thats a really good idea, i'd been trying to breed some new species and it was taking forever.

I've found chocolate frames to be very useful in more advanced beekeeping. If you combine them with a healing frame using alveary frame blocks in your alveary, and in addition have the maximum lifespan and productivity on your bees, it can lead to some very nice yields. You will have to do a lot of bee breeding before you're at this point, though.
